| did the heater levers on a 1965 type 1 sedan come originally with red and gray plastic round balls at the end of the levers or did soft fitted ones? |

If you have round balls, like the ones shown below, then those were taken from a 1966 or 67 bug. They were rectangular knobs in 1965.
edit, here's a better picture for comparisons, you can see the difference in the rubber emergency brake boots as well:

| Could the round knobs have been pulled from a late 1965 Beetle? I had one that was titled as a 1965 and it had the red and gray round balls....! |

What are the 1st 3 #s of our VIN ? 115 = a 65 and 116 would be a 66 . It could have been built late in 65 so it may have the newer style knobs .
Time to check your VIN to see when it was built _________________ Todd

The car is over 40 years old and Bugs are well known for to be a mixture of all sorts of parts. So conjecture sometimes is all we have. I do have a copy of the VW book Progressive Refinements, and the book The Car of the Century, both of which list item by item changes through the years. But not all of them. At least for this change I didn't see it listed. It could have been a late-year change and some 65s did have the balls on there. So the question remains, is yours a late-year prduction? What's your chassis number?

I have a German import '67, and I have ball-shaped red and blue knobs on my heater levers.
That said, the PO severely modified this car, but I don't think these knobs were changed. _________________ the3rdrock.com - …musings, discoveries and postulating by a restless itinerant in search of enlightment. |

red and blue? You got blue balls?
seriously, though, I can't say as I've seen blue on those before. |

| I no longer have record of what the VIN # was but in looking at my old ads I found that the VDO gas gauge was dated 4.65. I have a 1966 chassis in my garage and it is very identifiable by the 66-67 only slotted rims which were NOT on the 1965. |

I've a '66 Beetle, which color(s) are supposed to be on the Sphere-shaped knobs? I've a Red & a Black. Also, which side goes where? Red on the Left (drivers side)? _________________ 1947 Type 11a

1966 was Red and White knobs, In the owner's and service manual photos they seem to come put both looking both pretty light colored, but the right one was red and the left white.
