cool Scotty, thanks for posting those.
also notice that those ones do not have the strengthener indent on the taller tab and Monkeyspinners does have it. so it seems they did make some gradual changes closer to post BD.

well they could have changed at anytime in 54 i guess, i know most changes happened at the start of August but they were always improving bits a pieces... I'm not saying mine have never been changed for later ones but it was fairly original apart from it's brush paint job and earlier engine
do you know if the ones on the R/H screen of mine are the same? i'll have a look when i go and drag it out on Thursday(hopefully) |

Hi all,
Can anyone definitively say (with dated VW parts book or dated accessory book evidence) when "safari windshields" were first offered by VW on Barndoors? I've seen a few folks show pictures of '54 Barndoors with factory windshields. Not interested in the earliest Barndoor retro-fitted with windshields, I'm curious as to the first date that VWAG first made them available. Can anyone help out with their research?

Maybe thats why vw decided to change the front a pillar design as scotty pointed out in his post a while back?

from this picture it looks like barndoor safari's have flat handled latches where as the later ones have a slight rib down the center.
edit. is this the case?

What is everyone doing for disconnects that have installed safaris in their Barndoors? Are the later ones being modified? Not running wipers?
These are one of the last few pieces of my puzzle I'm missing...any info on this will be great! _________________ www.blastserv.com

No, the handles pictured are modified bug handles. |

I'm undoing the wiper arm nut and rotating the arms out of the way. _________________

It'd be good to get an answer to this one
The best I have is a Technical Bulletin supplement for the dealer Workshop Manual
For installing Safaris and Popouts
Dated July 1954
Interesting it says on p1 that the cranks cannot be reused
Looking at http://www.barndoor.dk/gallery.html it seems the bulk of BDs that appear originally fitted with Safaris are 1954
20-075178? (Feb 54) - updated?
20-0771** (March 54) - likely original
20-078088 (March 54)
20-078472 (March 54)
20-080883 (April 54)
20-083504 (May 54)
20-093552 (Aug 54)
20-095278 (Aug 54)
20-099284 (Oct 54)
20-100502 (Oct 54)
20-101319 (Oct 54)
20-061204 (Sept 53) is a wildcard entrant - very messed with
Of course, some of these BDs might have been retrofitted with Safaris back in the day
Good BD Safari hunting ground seems to be Portugal, Thailand, Australia, South America
Anyone spot/know an earlier BD that appears originally fitted with Safaris?
The definitive answer may lie in a 1953/4 issue of VWs 'VW Information' magazine _________________ -StockRocks- |

yes, that could have been the safari/popouts promo pic/demo bus...
why else would they have had them all open?
looks like no disengager wiper spindles, or at least no wiper blade retainer
ascending side mirror arm suggests pre Dec 52 _________________ -StockRocks- |

I wonder if the bus in this picture was used as a trial?
Upwards mirror arms and piano hinge quarter lights ended on the same chassis number according to barndoor.dk _________________

Yeah 2nd January 53. I guess the swivel quarterlights could have also been promoed on this bus? A revolution of windows.
Chromed wipers??

Well the chassis number listed on barndoor.dk is 20-041712 which is december 52.
Large silver headlights continued until quite late in 53, the exact date hasn't been figured out yet _________________

| So it does. I was going by Eccles specification guide as it was on the sofa anyway. Great book but I know it's full of errors. |
