(PS: those are just test wires)
no instructions, crappy markings, little knowledge.
where do these terminals go?

You can figure out the terminals with an ohmmeter. The 2 blades that have no resistance between them are not grounds. There will be some resistance between the ground and the other two.
L probably stands for lamp and would correspond to 49a.
The Tridon 2 wire flasher has L and X but no P so I think P is the ground.(31)
That would leave X as power. (49)
Here's how it's wired.

X=12VDC feed from fuse
L= Load - to the Turn Signal Switch
P=Pilot - indicator light in Speedo.

are you sure? I tried this with both the 2 prong (leaving the P one out of the equation) and the 3 prong flasher.
do i understand this right?

You can tell for sure with the resistance test I mentioned above but your drawing looks right. I know 2 prong ones don't have a ground or "P" terminal so P must be ground.
It won't flash right without the proper load on the system though.

that may be the reason it isnt flashing. so if i wired up 4 test bulbs - it should work? _________________ - Paul |

That's the reason LED's don't work with old flashers. Different resistance.
Should work with 4 bulbs. Many still will work but flash very fast to tell you a bulb is out.

learn something every day - thanks James.
it worked when i bench tested it with 4 bulbs.
now for the next Q - this may be obvious to some, but how do i get both Left and Right to flash, but not make them flash when i use my turn signal? I can get them to flash either - or.
edit: thinking about this last night - i bet it's the type of switch - yes? _________________ - Paul |

Yes the emergency switch does this and that's why it's a TPDT. (triple pole double throw). One pole switches the power source so the emerg work with the key off but signals need the key on. The other two poles are to keep left and right separate.

so the power for the signal switch comes from the 4 way switch .correct? _________________ THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT |

Yes, the diagram above has an error. The emergency switch is a triple pole double throw. The third pole, which is double throw, sends power to the flasher from terminal #30 when the key is off and switches to power from terminal #15 when the key is on.
This is so the emergency flashers work with the key off but the signals don't.

If you have flashers, with and without the key on, then power is getting to the flasher unit and it is working. Your problem then is between the flasher and the bulbs.
You could pull the plug off at the steering wheel and do some tests. Jump power to the left and right wires and see if the bulbs come on would tell you if the problem is at the signal switch.

ok i pulled the connectors .the r.side works but the l.side does not work..i pulled the emerg switch and jumped those wires .they worked . took the switch apart and nothing looks burnt.why would they not work at the plug? _________________ THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT |

Hey I missed this post when it was going on, but I will say this..... Don't use a PXL type flasher relay! None if those terminals are grounds - it's not for a VW application! VWs use a grounded relay..... the correct VW/Euro relay will be marked with Terminals 49, 49a and 31. Tridon makes one, it's the EP-35.

That's cool
Personally though, I prefer my lights to light up outside the car first. When you you use those things, the dash lights up first......... and stays on..... for sometimes a maddening amount of time before they start to flash and turn on outside. I can make making your intentions for a quick lane change invisible to anyone but you. I hated it myself when I had one.
Actually though, thinking back to 1990 when I used one of those - none of the terminals on the PXL is a ground, you'll pop a fuse if you connect one to ground. So I'm not sure exactly how your setup worked! I had to just leave one of them unhooked and run it like a 2-terminal relay.
Not for long though, I soon learned about using a later grounded VW relay and have enjoyed that setup ever since. Actually the stock relay was grounded, where it bolted to the body, the wiring diagram doesn't show this but it was.
