|
|
Well, I tried using Thunderbird and exhaust together as search terms, got a bunch of hits. Looks like most of them were Bus related, didn't find anything related to my question specifically.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone here has tried this one from Thunderbird:
I'd likely get the cheaper version that just has black painted pipes off the engine, with chrome mufflers. For the price, I don't expect the chrome to last forever, and I'm not looking for huge power. This is for my 73, with a stock engine, that might be getting a Megasquirt conversion and some other minor upgrades in the short term. Just wondering how this systems fits, if the full-flow oil filter is going to interfere (I've seen that mentioned on a few types of exhaust), and what the sound might be like ... don't want it too obnoxious. The fact that it comes out of the original muffler tip holes I find interesting.
thanks,
Ed N. |

Those are for looks and not performance. Just about any 4 into 1 header with a single muffler will be better.

I had one of those on a 40 horse way back in the day. They sound good! Not loud, but real deep and melow. The fit and chrome was good also, or at least it used to be. |

Thanks for the info, everyone. I realize that other styles of exhaust will make more power, for now it's just sound and appearance that I'm after.
thx,

If it fits your bill then go for it. I've got a decent shape "GT 4 tip" that sounds very good on a stocker. You can have for FREE if you want it.
Looks like this: http://www.cip1.ca/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DD%2D2070
Let me know,

J.C. Whitney sells them.
They have them with and without chrome.
They've sold the same set for over 30 years now.[/img]
Not a good pic, but this is what I have on my Invader GT.
It does sound good to me.

That exhaust probably won't work any better than dual cannons. It is still connected to cylinders firing in adjacent order just like the dual cannons.
I really wonder why people design stupid crap like this.
When I hear people talking about how great some exhaust sounds I wanna puke. If you have a noisy exhaust you can't hear what your engine is really doing. I'd much rather have an efficient free flowing quiet exhaust so I can hear the valve train and any possible detonation.
I can understand that someone might want the most efficient exhaust system possible and that it might be a bit noisier.
But to install an exhaust system for some bling factor that is noisy and DOESN'T give the best possible performance is moronic in my book.

Guys that have these exhausts installed, do you have a full-flow oil filter? If not, do you think it would clear OK?
thx,

Scott,
Actually these headers are not as bad you seem to think. The VW firing order is 1243. In this case 1&4 and 2&3 are tied together with equal length pairs. That means the pairs are 360 degrees out of phases with each other. While 4 into 1 headers are best, these are second best, and better than the dual cannon headers which actually do run adjacent cylinders into a pair, which would produce good scavenging on two cylinders, and bad on the other two, which ought to change the compression ratios because of the scavenging variation. Anyway, these might work well with two really small turbos for a twin turbo system, which is why I am considering them.
Thanks,
Gene |

Hello there Gene.
Currently I have taken over for scott as resident smart alec, it is my job to point out small errors.
The firing order is 4321, and so, it actually is the same as dual cannons
To pair the cylinders that fire 360 apart, it is 1-3 and 2-4
also, Jacobs ignition systems are better than sex.
