So i am new to the vw world and am learning as i go. but i have a 1971 vw 1600 dp. not a super. i have the baja kit and most of what i need. but i ahve a few questions. I was really thinking of doing an exoskeleton roll cage.but am not sure if that would be to much weight v.s. a 6 point cage. than if i did do the exoskeleton what do you guys think i should tie it into. I was also wondering what should i use for shocks. i have a limited income being i'm only 15 but i would like to be able to get some air and not bust anything. but mostly i would be in the mountons. and beings i'm new to this if there is anything that i should know that might help me in my build let me know thanks. |

I would suggest an inner roll cage. For one they're cheaper and two you can find many different variations pre fabbed. I saw a couple pictures of a bug with an external cage a couple days ago when I was wandering through the gallery. I'll try to find them again. It's a little ugly in my opinion if not done right. _________________ 1600cc '73 Super baja

Ah, here we go. Found this on page 552 of the offroad section.
You'd have a lot of fab work ahead of you if you want to do anything like this. _________________ 1600cc '73 Super baja

a little bit ugly? surely you jest. thats a whole lot of ugly right there.
to put it quite basically the cars body its self was designed to withstand a decent amount of force in the event of a roll over or crash. a roll cage is a secondary precaution and a key chassis component in most cases involving off road VW's.
most well built roll cages will include small external features to a roll cage, like tied in bumpers, running bars, and sometimes roof racks.
not to mention that there is really no bullet proof way to secure an external roll cage on a bug. _________________ never forget 1-31-07 |

Do an inner cage. If you're going to go to long travel eventually an inner cage will be a better option. That exo-cage should be in the abortions section. That thing is hidious . You would have to tie the front end in and that would be a mess. That might make things difficult for a one piece front end as well. _________________ My Build Post

ya thats not really what my idea of an exo looked like. it looks like someone never learned to bend pipe. At all. ok so inner is the way to go. so what should i do about shocks. this is going to be my daily driver but i want to be able to go offroad mabey get some air and not have to worry about breaking anything. |

Smokey,
Here are some pics that were posted by Adrenalin Junky awhile ago. I think if you compare these pics with ones SpenceSuper11 posted, it could look awesome. The rear exo on the yellow Baga is tight because it follows the flow of the existing body lines. If you would continue to follow the body line flow forward and over the body properly I think it would be an intimidating sight when you pull up behind someone and they see you in their rear view mirror.
Even though it would take some skilled tube bending it could be done.

i dont have the money to change out trailing arms ether. so i would be putting these shocks in with other stock things. such as the shock towers and so on. so i really am not sure what to do with the suspension. thanks for alll the ideas i'm not sure if those shocks would fit or not i really have no clue i was looking at these.
