Well, that car might be a European , it's not a Standard - too much chrome on it for that. Plus it has E-flashers, which may have been added or something but I don't think would have been on a European model.

Back to what was original for a 66 standard Very Happy
One thing I've learned there are a lot of difference between a 66 and a 64 and earlier.
Questions:

Do the front seats have tracks or wingnuts and holdowns?

Is there tarpaper under the floor mats?

What style of floor mats? Four piece rubber for the floors only?

What is on the tunnel? I think it takes a short rubber mat in front. How about the back?

What is covering the hand brake and heater controls?

Is there only one sunvisor? If so what do the plugs look like on the passenger side?

Is there carpet in the front on the sides under the dash? How about on the firewall?

On the 66 were the hubcaps still getting paint to match the bumpers?

My Canadian 1200A has tracks on the front seats, a passenger side visor and chrome hubcaps (flat 66-67 style) and bumpers. Our car had overriders too.
The interior of ours was ripped and missing parts, sorry I can't help you there.
I have a 1200A owners manual, but I don't know where it is right now. I'll make it this weeks project to see if I can find it.

Here is a 64 Canadian Custom. I took those pics maybe 10 years ago. We used some rare std parts to restaure a 63....I went this summer to try to save the seats but to late. Car is now not salvageable.

Note black knobs on the dash....white one was added. On previous pics of a 64 in that thread they are Ivory. The sterring wheel is in my garage. The horn button was in very good shape. We used the dash insert where the gas gauge on deluxe is on the 63. Hard to fing those without the holes for the chome moulding.

Darby it does have the 1200 logo, ya gotta squint your eyes a bit but it is 1200 logo, and right it did originally have blade bumpers as there are no overrider holes in the fenders and no overrider supports, most likely added later cause they were supposed to be safer or something

To throw into the mix: Our 1200A does not have an emblem on the decklid. It also has a 1965 style decklid (or, if you will, a 1966 decklid but without the holes for the emblem Wink ).

Yeah Chico Very Happy The PO was not part of the VW community although he is a VW guy. He knew what the car was and that's why it's in the condition it's in today. He decided to sell and did an internet search to find a vintage guy in Calif. My luck started when my email address ended up in his TO: line. After a few emails and phone conversations we reached a fair deal, I didn't steal it. His main concern was the car would go to someone who appreciated it and would keep in stock.

I've had quite a good time researching the car and DRIVING it. At this point I think I can make it a good driver for a reasonable amount of money.

A local friend of mine has a 65 Standard. He's owned it since 1969. It looks like a Canadian Standard however it was picked up in Germany and custom ordered by an American. Here are some photos of the 65 Standard.

65 color was Sea Blue, 66 they went to VW Blue

Fresh Air 36hp. Lots of engine tin for this motor only!

Holy Sox! I never knew so much about standards until nice ones like these started popping up- that is my new quest: scour Idaho for any and all standards- very nice.

Here's a summary of what I've found out about my car so far.

1966 Model 115 VW Sedan Standard w/ Sunroof
European Delivery - Germany

What is a Standard?
The VW Beetle most Americans are familiar with is the Deluxe which is the model sold in the US. In Europe VW also offered a stripped down version of the Beetle called the Standard. It cost about 15% less than the Deluxe model. Very few standards had sunroofs due to the added expense.

How Did a ’66 Standard Come (less) Equipped?

Ragtop instead of steel sunroof (if equipped, rare)
1200 40hp, leftover engine from earlier models
Three spoke steering wheel
Leftover license light housing
Pebble grain panel on the rear of back seat
Single horn grill
Steering wheel lock
KPH speedometer
Euro taillights
One speed wipers
Smaller headliner
Short tunnel mat
Only one sun visor
Plain upholstery and door panels
Painted Euro blade bumpers
Painted door, hood, and decklid handles
Painted interior window winders and handles
Painted wind wing and window divider
Painted front turn signal housings
Fuel tank shutoff and reserve valve
No radio
No dash trim
No fuel gauge
No Wolfsburg crest
No side or hood trim
No running board trim
No luggage area carpet
No window rubber trim
No speedometer trim ring
No cardboard wire cover under hood

Lingering Question:
Did it have the tarboard under the floor mats?

Your car looks great!

I can't believe your luck in finding your 1200A in my backyard! (I live near Marysville)

I found my 1200A owners manual and will get it scanned.

I also found the birth certificate! Don't know how it ended up at my house, but I hung it up in the garage, net to the one for the 1300.
Production date: Dec 29, 1965
Delivery Date: Jan 7, 1966 to Canada

Here it is in real life!
An original part in the accessory color after it changed from grey sometime in 1964. The new color is silver with some green tones.

The bumpers, door handles, decklid latch, bonnet handle, and the interior window winders/door handles were painted this color.

I have all four interior pieces in the original color.

Hi Brian, saw a movie the other day on TMC called THE MAN BETWEEN. It's about a black marketeer that gets a young English woman out of East Germany at the beginning of the Russian blockade. The movie credits say it was made in 1953. The black marketeer (James Mason) drives a 1954 standard. You can see it's a standard because of the steering wheel and the 3/4 headliner, however on the outside it has no chrome on the running boards & around windows. It does have chrome euro blades and the chrome body side molding like my 65 111. Neat movie with beetles all over the place and looks like it was filmed in West Germany with lots of bombed out buildings from the war.
Thanks for posting the pictures of our cars together.

Oh Man, that is great. It answers quite a few questions I had pending. You need to sell me that book Wink

But does anyone know if there should be tarboards under the rubber floor mats on a 66 Standard?

Sorry, It's going to be buried with me along with my Ted Williams baseball glove! Laughing

I got that at Kelley Park a few years back. It's the only one I had ever seen for sale.
