Body parts can make the average man go bankrupt, same with engine and tranny stuff. Be prepared to dish out your chekbook on the resto, looks for rust, what needs to be replaced, etc. And be aware on how much it'll cost. $4k seems like a fair price for a solid resto project. But you can easily spend $6k (more likely alot more then that) on the resto, but you can also find a few 356 coupes for $10k range that are good drivers as is. _________________ www.runtrod.com

Back when I was restoring 356's a car in the condition you discribe can cost upwards of 30K to restore
Interior, installed 4000.00 plus
Long block rebuild 3500 to 6000
Body and paint easy 10,000
Trans rebuild 2500
Brakes and parts 1000
Rechrome 1000 to 3000
Floor replacement 500
This doesn't include chassis rebuilt and/or detail, trunck and/or engine compartment detail.
My friend bought a 62 running driving, rust free OG car and spent 25k redoing it, no engine or trans rebuild, just paint, interior and detail!! _________________ Stocking distributor of "The Funky Green Panels"

$25,000 on paint & interior? That is absolutely ridiculous!!! I am ALL for professional work and the "you get what you pay for" motto...but $25K...that seems excessive.
$10K for paint and body (as mentioned above) seems to be a REALLY high price. Is this for a car that someone just drops off and says, "restore it no matter what the cost"...or is this a price that it would cost for me to drop off my car and ask for a 100% premium paint job along with the typical body work? |

Back in the 80's when we had all the body work done, the final prime block and paint on a 356 body would easily be 10K. 356 are one of the hardest cars in the world to paint, specialy if done right.
On the auction cars we built, we would do all the final prime and block, get the car ready for paint, then take it to One Day Paint. We would furnish the paint and tip the painter BEFORE and AFTER the job was done.
Not counting our labor, with tips, materials and paying one day we could paint a 356 for under 500 dollars. Of course then we would have time color sanding and buffing it out.
An average 356 resto in my shop back in the 80's was 25k and we did some that cost up to 75k.
I am still holding one that I started over 15 years ago and at the time the owner pulled the plug he was at 52K and still had at least 15K to finish it. In todays money he's looking at 30K to finish it now.

Thanks so much, Rob, for letting us know about the 356. We brought her home last weekend. _________________ Vicki
