I removed this thing (it wasnt connected to anything) from the left(drivers side) firewall of my 71 super. I have no idea what it is, wondering if anyone knows what it is.

Not sure but it looks a lot like the fuel pump on my MG Midget. |

Hiya Black,
It is most definitely not an EGR valve.
Katalla and mudpump are correct; that unit is an altitude compensator. One vacuum port on the compensator is hooked to the port on the intake manifold inlet casting, the other vacuum port is hose-hooked to the throttle positioner which lives just in back of the carburetor.
Your throttle positioner is probably long gone. Most have been removed. _________________ Mike

Hiya Black,
With dualies I don't think a throttle positioner is possible.
And there are many out there who will tell you that a throttle positioner is not necessay or even desireable. Certainly, most VWs are running around today without it and doing just fine.
If you want to sell your altitude compensator take a look at the Samba Classifieds. That'll give you a pretty good idea of their worth. _________________ Mike

they were used to control the throttle postioner, just like BanzaiKG said in his picture.
useless to you. useless to most others unless they are going for originality or emissions compliance. |
