no part about this is fast, but i do stay on a project till its done. the worst is letting the POR-15 set. i am just glad i am almost done with the welding on the nose. i need to pull the doors to finish crimping over the skin. i like to weld, but holy f@%k was that a lot of work. the bodywork part should go quick. once the whole nose is in primer, it will go pretty fast |

well, test fitted the windshield (well, a donor window) and got a skim coat of filler on. the windshield went in dry (no lube) and a relatively cold seal (about 50'f) and what a bitch, but, no cracking, so hopefully we will get lucky when we put it together after paint. i think we should use a 3/16 rope, not the 1/8 we used tonight. anyways.......

but definitely getting better!
Getting closer and closer to this day:
She misses her friends!
All I can say is I'm glad tomorrow is payday! And a big THANKS for all the work you've put into this project!

no problem~ i am glad it's payday too. i need to beat you out of some $$ for supplies it is coming along more and more as the days pass. this is the slowest part of it, fill, sand fill, sand, sweep up and sand some more. still need to do the floor and dogleg, but that will be a cake walk compared to this |

2 months, in two months I could replace that much metal, and it would never look that good. Clecos as a welding ground, that is my new excuse for speding all that money on a bag of em. I'm sure you're familiar with teh where the hell can I ground this game? Problem solved.
what do you use to flange the metal? I have been considering investing in such a tool, as I am doing this kind of work more and more it seems. _________________ [email protected]

i used my teeth no, seriously i used this:
it works great, but loud as hell. its coming together pretty well, i hope to have the center of the nose in primer tonight, the operative word is 'hope' |

ever use the vice grip version? I have yet to find someone who can say if they actually work well or not, so I hesitate to spend my 30 bucks. _________________ [email protected]

the vice grips are ok for a tight area, but are 'notchy' on long spans, and your hands are tired as hell after you use them for a while. the air hammer one makes a nice even smooth edge.
tonights progress:
drivers floor welded in. not crazy for the fitment, it needed some tweeking, but holy hell is that a rugged piece of steel
nose in primer. i still need to sand out the headlight buckets and the air vent. the belt line still needs to get stripped and the bottom needs some finishing off.
still need to takle this

thanks Geno. i am pretty lucky to have a garage like i have, and the worlds best, most understanding wife. she is really good about this kind of stuff.
well, had a town meeting to go to tonight. if you ever wanted to punch someone in the throat, it would be the planning and zoning commission. some day, we are going to build a new house, which means a bigger shop with a better layout. at any rate, didn't get too much done, but i made a couple repair panels
the lower nose section was put in by someone else. i didn't realize the extent of how much was missing on the back side, so i made the corner pieces tonight. i need to weld up the dogleg but once in place, it has a really tight edge with the nose. kind of hard to tell in the pix
the vertical part is nothing more than a semi curved (dam near straight) piece of metal. the drivers side looks about the same |

well, bit of an update
dogleg fitted and done. let me just say klokkerholm stuff really just plain sucks. i know they are one of the few that make them, but they took a lot of fooling with to get right. also, there is no nut plate to bolt the bumper to, which took more time to do. speaking of time, i have about 80 hours into this so far and have at least another 10 or so to go. anyway, on to the pix
first coat of POR-15. i really wanted to put some gussets in the dog leg, but after 3 tries i gave up. it was very difficult to judge how much room there is inside the box. the inner part was already tack welded in a few spots, and was pretty well aligned, so i didnt want to re-do too much of what was done. don't let any heavy heifer's jump up and down on the bumper
and got the nose in a good coat of fill and sand primer. i have a few spots to take care of, should only take a few hours. not too bad considering the work
im friggen beat. going to bed. stay tuned, more to come |

Oh man that is looking good. A lot better than the patch panels I just put into my cousins Samurai for him. Makes our busses look rust free that 86 does. Your work is incredible, is it what you do for a living, or just a .very. invested hobby? I just noticed you are in CT, I would love to come down and just watch you work for a day, one day I want to be able to do body work and make it look good enough for someone to want to give me money for it. Not that I want the money, Ijust want to have something to be proud of. Me + welder +sheetmetal = puddles of steel on the floor. _________________ [email protected]

hey fusername. i am a professional bum for a living i work at a european car shop. i am pretty much self taught. when i first got a vw (when i was 11, 19 years ago ) no one wanted to give me the time of day. i met a couple who took me under their wing and the rest is history. i never had the $$ to pay someone to do this kind of work, and for the work i had seen done, i wouldn't have payed for. so, i thought well, what the hell~ if people will pay for poor work, i know i can do better (that and i am a bit fussy) so i started reading, talking to body guys etc and that is pretty much how i got into body work. i hate every square inch of it, but love to paint, good prep is key to a great job.
you don't want to hang out with me, i'll put you to work |

hey that would mean i get to figure out how its supposed to be done, getting practice at the same time would only make it better. I'm gonna hafta break into your shop later this week and set up cameras to figure out just how this magic happens. so far two cars have suffered through my paint and body work, and it is clear I have a real long way to go. now number 3 is under the knife, the stupid thing is made entirely out of 22ga an dhigher sheet metal and rotted to death. _________________ [email protected]

Good thing your real paint and body skills are better than your MS Paint skills, skills!
Now that's some funny stuff, right there!
