Would like to know if these springs can be used on our beloved aircooled engines. Also what is the height of the vw springs and the diameter.

I've seen posts where people say they run them but I've yet to see anyone mention the specs or give a part number for the ones they use.

These springs will make a world of difference for valve control. I only wish someone that has used them will post here soon.

Bad bug- I haven't used them but am very interested as well. Some information from Alan Harland on Beehives:
-you need a .200" longer valve.
-installed height- 1.720 to 1.740"
-at 1.720"- 170 lbs. on the seat, 350 lbs. over the nose at .575" lift
-coil bind- 1.080"
-spring diameter- 1.2975"
- titanium retainers- 7 grams each

They're supposed to control harmonics much better than conventional springs so lighter spring pressures can be used. RD Spring (760 948 4698) are the people to talk to. Joel Mohr (posts on the CLF)is also a fan of beehives. He runs a shop in Hesperia, CA.That's all I know. Let me know if you find out anything. Al

Call and talk to Geoff Hart. He told me when I was ready to step up some more that he had something worth looking at. He pulled a set of these out from his front office.

well it seems like the natural progression, GM is still making two valve head, pushrod engines and they seem to think this is the way to control the valves.. I want this technology on my next heads!

As already mentioned, contact Joel Mohr. IIRC, he has a combo that does not require longer valve stems.

You guys have it figured about right.
The springs would fit on the head ok I think
The problem is the coil bind at 1.080. Usual installed height is 1.550, so if we leave .080 from coil bind that only allows .390 lift.
If you worked with retainers and sunk the valves a little 1.600 installed height is easily possible, but that is still not enough, only .440 lift possible.

So the logical thing is to use type4 length(.200 longer) or 1/4" longer valves.

If you only plan on using .450 or less lift I know of a oval wire conical spring that binds at 1.00" even, and yields 240 lb open.
I will give you the part number if you answer me three riddles.......

I installed a set of Beehive springs on my heads a year ago. I started with new CB 044 heads, 40 x 35.5. I found the install height and necessary seat pressure information and used a chart they have over at comp cams website. For my application I used part number 26125. I use 1.25 scat rockers and when my geometry was dialed in I had .496 lift with a w120 cam.

From my limited experience, different head and valve combos will use different springs. My buddy did the same as me but he used a different spring and he had street eliminator heads and what looked like stock style valves (my valves had surelock keepers on them which i believe changed the install height number a little).

All this was put together over at rimco. I worked with Todd over there, finding measurements and figuring seat pressures.

So far it runs very well, but to be honest, I don't rev my motor high enough often enough to take advantage of them. I, however, believe that it is a very worthy upgrade for the valve train.

btw, I opted to not use titanium retainers, 1 for cost, and 2 because I was unsure how they would hold up to the higher seat pressures that VW's have.

i sent a message to mohr, he directed me to r/d springs. this is the reply i got!

Hello Kris,

I do have a beehive kit available that uses th OEM valves. It's only rated for a max lift of 0.520" and the valve guide boss must be turned to a diameter 0.625". It has 95 lbs seat pressure and 260 lbs at 0.500" lift. The kit cost is $360.48 and includes beehive springs, titanium top retainers and bottom spacers, $227.38 for the steel retainer kit.

Regards

Bump.

Any updates? That price quoted above, is that for 32 valve V8 kit or only 16 springs?

I run Comp Cam #26125 springs with long valves (CB racemaster wich are good with their 8mm stem and 5/16" tip offering plenty of valve locks choice) and with an FK44 on my 2165 bus engine bare Tims stage 2 heads, chambers and exhausts ports CBC-1 coated, it runs great. All part are available as a single replacement part in case of failure, I'm happy with those Wink

Performance Springs Inc. sells a beehive spring that will fit some VW applications.

Spring # = D148X
ID top = 0.630"
ID bottom = 0.850"
OD bottom = 1.180"
117lbs @ 1.500"
250lbs @ 1.000"
$104 / 8springs

R/D spring has made a retainer specifically for this spring to use standard VW valves and locks.

What is the wind speed velocity of an unladed swallow?

Do tell the oval wire spring P/N?

Do you have any pictures?

Thank you

What makes a beehive keep harmonics under control is to have a one end bigger than the other by as much as possible.

To use a spring with a smaller than stock VW OD is a bad idea just so the spring will have the installed height you want. To use a spring like the part # above is not much better than using a standard VW HD single spring.

I will have more on this latter.
