My 53 Canadian SC has pretty much the exact same M codes including the dust filters. I think/suspect they went behind the cooling vents on the sides of the truck (engine bay side of course). Wonder if anyone has ever seen a set of these? _________________ http://www.nuts.commercial-air.com/

My '53 24 G (Bus) has the M 010 -"Dustfilters for the engine compartment" so it's not just a truck thing. I also have that unknown M 009 code. _________________ ____________________

I checked it out today and just posted a stack of photos in the Gallery.
1953 Single Cab VIN # 20-058686
Joe removed the bed metal today
Some more exterior photos:
Canada
It has some rust but it's restorable. A lot of original and correct '53 parts like speedo pod, starter button, master cylinder, etc.. Unfortunately the speedo is missing because I think it's low mileage. The gas pedal has no wear hole like most. _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search

Ok... NOT Type II... but on Early Splitwindow Bugs.... we see the M010 come up often on Hoffman Cars that have Cyclone Air Cleaners.. and I have always thought M010 could be a Cyclone.
Were Cyclone's ever available on Barndoors? Cyclone Air Cleaners are often referred to in VW Literature as "Air Cleaners for Dusty Conditions". _________________ DB

This is something I considered too but I don't think the Cyclone would fit on a truck.

Cool truck! Just visiting from the regular ol' split bus forum.
I too have Mcode 010 for the dust filters, on a '62 dusty conditions truck. I have the oil bath air cleaner that appears to be original to the truck (At least it's correct for the year.) I can't find any extra holes or mounting points where a large air cleaner or filters would have been.
No one seems to know anything about them. I've also contacted dropgates.com...no dice. _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

RickC has a dusty conditions truck with the cyclone. It's a sweet setup. There is a picture somewhere on the samba... maybe in hazetguys gallery. |

So is there screw holes surrounding the engine area? _________________ Copyright 2012-apocalypse, CJ Industries, Inc.

I don't believe so, but Rick would need to chime in on that. It could be that there are two versions of dusty conditions. The economy version just puts filters around the engine compartment and a cyclone - a bolt on accessory almost. Then there is the extreme dusty versions like Ricks, with no side vents, air intakes in the cab and a channel to get the air to the engine. This is all speculation on my part and I'm no expert. |

interesting.
i wonder when that VW of Canada VIN plate was used, or what's the significance of having or not having it. the popcorn BD was a '54 and it had a VW Germany VIN plate. _________________ scott lyons

I've seen that plate on a couple other Canadian Barndoors.
Was the popcorn Bus an original Canada Bus? _________________ How to: Post Photos | Search

Do I see that correctly? After cutting away the rust, and disconnecting the lower a-pillar area, is the weight of the entire roof and nose area being supported by the wee heater tube? |
