Well Im just gonna get this shit out there. This is why I may seem harsh when someone says its wrong to slam a split.
I got to Splitsville in Oct 2002. It took me nearly 15 years to get here. When I got into VW's it was 1986 I was 14 and just out of Jr High. I told these older VW dudes I went to school with that I was gonna get a split and they just laughed at me like it was some big joke. It wasnt easy and I finally got that bitch. I sacraficed a sweet 21 window to get it. I told Trayle that one day, we the GFK would leave all these 60's cars alone and get SPLITS. The ball started rolling and we were like, Damn can you imagine if we rolled into classic with like 5 or 6 slammed splits? all dumped on earlies pissing off the puritans! That was real shit. We believed that Splitsville was the promised land and I still do.
I didnt get a split because it was the cool thing to do at the time. I didnt get one to feel appreciated. Im straight in it for the love of it and the long haul it took to get one. I will always have a split. Trayle will have his split soon, Richard has his 50 rag and believe me when I say this, SPLITS are for the hard core. Its ashamed some people couldnt see the uniqueness in them and they get used up and passed on like 2 bit whores. I believe that either by chance, luck, money or divine intervention some people get splits and they cant handle Splitsville and they move out to the suburbs believing the grass is greener. Thats fine. Nothing against any of the owners of these 2 splits, Im just saying, anyone can buy a split and restore one but it takes a real man to slam the fuck out of one and rep it till the fuchs fly off.

Sorry, didn't want to bump another old thread. I've got that 'split' itch now BAD.
If someone could point me to some splits for sale (I've searched the usual places of course), maybe I missed something?
I'm particularily looking for a really slick site in Europe, with a bunch of splits in various shapes or restoration (FVIW? Something like that, damn). Nice slick site, lots of good stuff on it.
PS Who's the above quote by? _________________ Cootra |

hen you finally get that split and restore it and its ready to go on the road. would you really take it out on the road or just leave it there for shows and such. making sure it doesn't get a dent or scuff anywhere on it. _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

thats what i thought. What is the point of having it, if you're not going to drive it. just to say that you have one? _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

What's the point? I think we been through this before here on the rants. but for me lets see the fact that I don't want to drive the car if I "DON'T" have to hey if you have a split or any other vw its totally up to you if you want to drive it.
I just choose not to and it still looks like the day I finished it over 7 years ago. <---- the point _________________ CRG

i had the choice last week between a 50 split and a 53 oval rag.. the split was 99% rust free and original inc paint with all of the correct period bits and accessories.. it was sweeeeeeet.. still running cable breaks and a crash box..
the rag has been completely restored and is mint.. although by no means as amazing as the split.. no way.. its lovely and all but just doesnt have the character..
i had to choose the rag really because i drive whichever dub i have daily.. and i dont have the skills or the funds needed to bring the split up to the rag standards.. i wouldve had to uprate the box and brakes before even starting on tidying.. just wasnt in my range .. and i definitely dont have the talent..
id love a split though.. they are my holy grail.. im just gonna have to keep on saving and practicing.. but one day.. oh yes.. one day..
i can see why the itch.. bigtime |
