Thanks
PS: Not talking about the rear quarters.. I mean the rear window |

Never saw a flip-up window in back, just the louvers for the back window that hinged up for cleaning the glass (popular in the late-70s). |

I too have seen, in european magazines, safari rear windows.
There was a thread in the oval forum awhile back, where someone else had seen them, asking for source info. There was no source provided there either. _________________ Greg

I remember seeing a "rear hatch" for a bug that kinda looked like a split window in the mid 80s. I was hindged in the middle on top of it and had the gas shocks to hold it up. Dont know who made them. I was in the custom trends section in VW Trends.

Only thing I could find in the gallery. Looks like what Tim is talking about above.

It seems a bit dangerous, air-wise. |

I could never understand why VW never installed an opening rear window in the first place. Only crap seems to accumulate back there as it is a pain to get stuff in and out. |

I agree..
A rear window hatch would create more usable space.. Now to get it made! |

I've seen those done like that before but they were custom made. I've seen people use the small split window conversion for later bugs and instead of moulding them in they made them into a flip up panel. I don't know of anyone ever making them as a flip up, only custom bt the owners. _________________ 72 Standard Beetle |

I don't know who made them, but in the 90's somebody advertised a safari window for the rear with a full rear window.... I remember seeing them in ads. _________________ '59 Beetle.

I remember seeing these as well back in the late 80's / early 90's advertised in VW Trends - wish I had some old issues to see who the supplier was! |

That looks to be one of those fiberglass insirts just with the vents on the bottom cut off so that it will fit in the window opening. Get some kind of sturdy frame for around it a hinge and some kind of locking device.....it could be done. _________________ In a sea of american muscle there is alittle bug hiding in the corner...

I am currently working on oval rear safari windows. I am trying to make them out of steel, and my first attempt worked out well except for the fact that I couldnt get the ends to meet the way I had liked. I have a pic of one that someone else did out of alluminum, and it looks nice, but they used regular aluminum side pop outs, which I dont want to have to purchase. Cant seem to get the pic posted here...anyway, if you are interested, I will try and keep you posted on my progress. I also make regular safari windows for bugs if you havent seen my ad before. Best of luck to you with your search!
