Okay...so this is the floorpan apres rust converter and truck bed liner paint. That white stuff is some marine enamel left over from fixing the boat. It's just to plug the holes, it's waterproof, and hard as nails. Therefore, will work for now.
NEXT!
What does this blue button do? Is it supposed to be there? I'm always a little scared of mysterious under-dash buttons...
My next problem is to make the horn work, it's never worked since i've owned it. PO didn't say anything, and there is nothing even if you wailed on the horn button. There *is* a horn under there, andit's hooked up to some wires, but I have no idea how to go about figuring the thing out.
Here's some pics of the rats nest of wires..
Does anyone know which one is the horn? _________________ '68 White Bug

Blue button? Who knows? Try following the wires and see what it goes to...it may be the horn.
The horn not working is usually a bad ground. Look at the steering coupler and make sure the wires are connected. Also look under the horn button. _________________ '67 westy

You first there tiger
Easy bro, don't scare her off yet. Let one of the timeless epic ignition, cooling, or "correctness" debates/rants handle that.
Island_Girl,
There are Good wiring diagrams on this site as well as various other locations.

Cocaine?? Is it cocaine?!?
Could help right about now. My father and I were testing the horn, and as far as we can tell the button on the steering wheel isn't getting any power, and after testing the horn alone think it's broken too.
If you took out the horn and wired it to a battery, it should just blast at full capacity, right? Making a trip to Canadian Tire (yay!) for a new horn, wire, and a button for the dash. I'm just going to stick a button on the underside of the dash to get the inspection over with. Want to get driving again! That, plus all the guys at my new job think it's awesome and I want to show it off . _________________ '68 White Bug

....And the clutch cable snapped during a driving lesson. Dangit.
Any links to a good, photo-illustrated page/thread about replacing a clutch cable? _________________ '68 White Bug

Here ya go guys, I finally got around to it.
Also, another problem:
I drove into town today, and could shift into gears, albeit not very smoothly. Then, when leaving the store, I could get the car started in neutral but couldn't shift into *any* gears. The clutch pedal felt a little soft in comparison to normal, and when I took the assembly out the cable was still in there, intact. I had to coast to a parking lot and leave it there, but will go back later (when it's cooler out) to jack it up and check the other end of the cable. Is it common for the wingnut to slip on the end of the clutch cable? The cable has been in for awhile, so I don't think it stretched.... Any ideas? It basically feels like the clutch just isnt disengaging at all, therefore not allowing me to shift. But the pedal has a *little* pressure on it, so the cable didn't snap.
Je confuse. _________________ '68 White Bug

| It's possible the last time the cable was changed, it was obstructed. Maybe going over something in it's path. It finally slipped off of it and now feels loose. Had it happen to me. Just tightened the wing nut and all was good. Just my $.02. |
