Ok, maybe I'm too new to understand, but why put the angle in the rear wheels? Doesn't it just distract from an overall good looking VW? I've been looking through some threads, and I see a lot of really sweet beetles/busses with the tilt thing going on. Every time I see it though, I can't help but think it looks a bit.. goofy? No offense meant.
Can anyone explain this trend to me? |

With a swingaxle rear, when the rear is lowered the tops of the wheels tilt inward. If it is raised, they tilt outward. _________________ Greg

Ok. 'Camber'. How do you use that in a sentence? Like, "Oh, I see your rear wheels are cambered?" or "Sweet camber going on back there." ? |

From what I understand VW designed the cars with camber so that more of the tire would be on the road. The roads in Germany were crowned pretty severe, maybe so water would run off them better(that is my guess)
When you raise or lower them it just makes the camber worse, but from the factory they had a fair amount of camber |

No, they did not.
Look at the rear wheel alignment specs on a swing axle car. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Well, according to specs they didn't have much, but I've seen quite a few 'stock' bugs rolling around that have either positive or negative camber. I see a few with positive when there's nobody in the car. Maybe just the lightness from rust holes or something, I don't know.
Either way, Some camber looks sporty, but when you lower a car too much and the camber gets extreme, it's not only really funky looking, but it eats through tires and drums like crazy. Back before I did the trans lift on my car, I would have to get new tires every two months. _________________ «•Lie Down... Good Bug•» |

Turtle-
Just do a bit of research and learn what an IRS (independant rear suspension) trans is and what a swing axle trans is and how they function. '68 and later has the IRS. With swing axle if you raise or lower the rear the wheels will tilt either out or in. Either way it's bad for the tires and wheels. But if it's more important for someone to have it either raised or lowered than to have proper wheel stance then thats the price to pay. Stock height? Yea, sure. 40 years of wear and tear on the suspension or a fat mother in law in the back seat isn't going to result in stock height. _________________ 71 Superbug

Most of what you see on todays stock cars is sag in the rear torsion bars. Cambered the other way, is probably torsion bars set wrong, or someone with coil over, or air shocks. _________________ Society is like stew. The ones I've seen are probably set wrong, then, given they were old junky bugs that didn't seem to have ANY extra work done to the suspension in terms of coilovers or the like.
Either way, Positive sucks because it's not only bad, it makes the car look goofy. _________________ «•Lie Down... Good Bug•» |

Well no, I mean milder settings. A little positive looks 'right', a little negative looks unnatural and weird, like a cartoon car or something. Especially with skinny tires. Just god-awful. _________________ «•Lie Down... Good Bug•» |

Well, my right-rear tire blew today, and it reminded me of this topic, haha.
Negative camber causes:

Desertbusman, The 68 had swing axle unless it was an Autostick. Then it would be an IRS. _________________ Josh
