What is the factory setting for the mixture screw on a Solex 28 PICT-1
carb? I supspect it may be too lean since my car has been running hot.
I can not find any adjustment specs in my shop manuals. If this has been covered before can I get some help before this is deleted or locked? Thanks.
I had put in new "tar board" from Mid America in the engine compartment but it was nothing like the original material. When the car got hot the crap would get soft and flop around. I ripped it all out and now all that's there is a material similar to Dynamat sound proofing. I also made sure my tin is in between the main engine rubber seal. Next thing I plan to check is the oil releaf valve, if its dirty it would not allow oil into the cooler and it would get hot correct? I have a 64 Bug 1200 40 HP with a dog house offset oil cooler. Before my car did not get hot. So I'm removing what I changed. To bad I can't find the original tar board. Thanks

The idle mixture screw affects idle through low/mid speed. Once you are underway the main jet and air correction jet determine the mixture far more than the idle adjustment does. If it's running hot, check timing and your main jet size, not the idle mixture.

Setting the air/fuel mixture at idle is covered by your Owner's Manual.

Most of them are online or down-loadable here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/

There is no factory setting, you have to tune it. A good starting point is 1.5 turns out from all the way in. Do not crank it all the way shut with force or you will damage the carb.

Turn it in until the engine reached fastest idle rpm, then about 1/8 turn more clockwise. This is called "lean-best" mixture and is a good compromise of emissions and idle smoothness, and should give a good transition to light throttle.

KTPhil thank you,

Everett, Anyone on here sell them? Anyone have a source for oil pressure relief caps or the tool to unscrew them? Thanks

Have you pulled your plugs to see their condition? If you are not running "too lean" then you have another issue.

I'm going to take a few days off to get things done. I have a compression tester and I'll pull the plugs. I put in new BOSCH plugs and wires about 700 miles back. I found an old carpenters square that may work as a straight edge to get my oil relief valve cap off. I want to make sure its not cruded up and sticking. I'll also do the carb adjustment as stated and check it out. I got the dwell at 48 degrees, set timing with a strobe at 7.5 BTDC and set the idle to 900 rpms. I also got under the back and got the engine tin in between the new rubber seal and checked my down tubes. Its a mother to line up the small sleeves with the holes in the tin. I have a dog house fan/cooler with a fresh air 1200 exhaust system. My exhaust is new, is it normal for it to turn a kind of whitish color that rubbed off on your hand or is that another sign of overheating? I drove it around town awhile and it did not get too hot. I'm debating taking it up the highway for 20-30 minutes to see. I borrowed a candy thermometer from my wife. When you check the temp can you just hold the end to the block or is it necessary to stick it in the dip stick hole? Thanks

I put it down the hole.

The whitish color sounds like the new exhaust primer coating burning off, this is normal.

Hello,
I have some problems with solex 28 pict 1 carb.

I opened it, cleaned it, changed all gaskets, put it back together.
same problems...

It starts, works nicely when its cold, when it warms up, it dies. I can start it again without any problem (just needs some gas pressing) but when air valve is fully opened it has no idle and ot revs only 3-10sec I tried all the way of idle mixture screw and eaven removed the spring from gas likage screw to turn it more in but it doesnt work on idle :S I start the engine, move to back of the car, open the lid and it dies....when I play 1mm with gas linkage it works well but If I dont it dies. Looks like it works with acceleration pump fuel only on idle :S

Because the gas valve is opened so much the revolutions come down really slow but it still doesnt idle. When I almoust close the air valve it idles.

Idle screw does like nothing :S I used compressed air for cleaning it.
Could anybody explain me on simple way what parts are working in carb when its idling. What pipes and jets I should check once more?

what could be the problem?
