|
|
Hey y'all -
Probably a stupid question (but not for me) - After adjusting my steering worm gear play on the box, I'm wanting to check the oil level. Can anyone point me in the direction of the fill plug location? I've got 2 square socket "thingies" on top next to the adjustment screw, but I've no idea what they are.
Thanks in advance. _________________ '69 Standard Beetle |

I have a 68 and it does not have a filler plug. It's probably the same for a 69. |

I have a 1968 and noticed some oil around the bottom of the steering box.
Is this anything to be worried about? |

If it's not leaking, the fluid is not going to evaporate or disappear so no real reason to check it.
There is no dipstick.
If you disassemble it, then you fill it with the required amount of fluid via the 2 holes with plastic caps. Remove both caps, pour in one hole and leave other hole open as a breather. _________________ 69 Beetle

Thanks Spotco. I did manage to locate the plugs and removed them. Unfortunately, they disintegrated on contact. As I suspected, the gear box oil level was so low that I couldn't even see it with my most powerful light. I filled it with 90w and now the search begins to locate new plugs.
I'm wondering if the plugs I retrieved from my last master cylinder replacement are the same size. I'll try to locate them tomorrow.
Thanks again for the responses. _________________ '69 Standard Beetle |

90wt is fine, but if you filled it up, you're gonna puddle.
You should only have 160cc (about a 1/3 of a pint).
I forgot to mention those plastic caps would fall apart when you touch them. _________________ 69 Beetle

Yes, those master cyl caps work great for that. |
