Another Kubel Rising (Repro Kubelwagen)

Hello-
Right now I'm building a Kubelwagen Replica from Kooblekar in New Mexico. The "donor" is a 1968 VW bug with a 1600 cc engine from a 1971 Karmann Ghia. I like the early air filters on the Ghia because they look similar to the ones on the Kubelwagen. This is a all metal kit that came in pre cut pieces. Alot of work went to making the pieces fit during the building process. Making some changes to the kit, most noticeably, under the dash and along the bottom of the doors. It will not be the closest copy to an original that has been posted on here, but we are making every effort we can on the project. I already have original headlights, post war military Hella taillights and a original Blackout light for the back. Hope to start painting the body by the end of the year. I will be using the vehicle for reenacting events. Will keep you guys updated, until then take care. Please click on the links below for the pictures of the project, thanks.

Looks like I'm having problems posting pics to the forum. The directions I got from a member here was:
"Paste the link to the image then select it and hit the "img" Button at the top of the reply"
Thought I did it right, could some one please help, thank you.

Sounds like what you are trying to say is to direct link it to pics that are saved in my hard drive on my computer. That might be the case, if the picture needs to end with .jpg. I will try to work it out, sorry for the inconvience and please enjoy the links posted thank you. Want to see if I can get it resolved before making more posts

you can also post the pics in the Gallery here at the Samba and then link to them, pics posted from "outside" sources dissappear when the host deletes them. Pics posted in the gallery here will be here as long as the post.

Open the page with the image on it then right click the image and select properties. From the properties window copy the URL and paste it inside an image tag like this (REMOVE the "*" in front of img):

Making some changes to the kit, most noticeably, under the dash and along the bottom of the doors. The changes has not been finished yet below the doors. Also we are making it look like one long piece from the front to the back, as they are on the originals. As you can see they are being put together in sections starting with the front left and right pieces. It will look like it is running as one piece below the doors when we get done. It will not be the closest copy to an original that has been posted on here, but we are making every effort we can on the project. Will post more pics of this area on the inside later after we get done.

Are you working with an older kit? I thought Kooblelkar stopped selling theres in kit form a while back. I am wanting to build one but need to downsize the fleet of cars first and find a job second before i can really get started on one. Yours looks good so far.

During the process of applying skin, we had to do alot of work to get them to fit on the cage frame properly.

The "point" behind the rear wheel will be removed and we will make a separate piece for that as they were on the originals. Earlier Kubels has this on the body, then was left off due to material shortages in late war production

Looks good so far. What are your plans with the engine compartment ventilation? Are you going to use adapters for the wheels?

wow ! that´s a lot of weight for that little car. When you´re finished It´s probably gonna weight about 1 ton. You´ll need a strong engine then.

The body is actually pretty light considering all of the reinforcements the kit came with. If I were to build another one I would change a lot. As it is a first time build, and primarily, not my car, I'm somewhat limited on what changes I can make. Razz

That said, I figured I would update the thread with recent pics. (these are linked thumbnails but the forum coding kinda screws up how they open, my apologies)

This is what the original kit looks like. The first time I saw a kooblekar, not knowing what an original kubel looked like or anything, this really stood out as being off so I wanted to change it.

This is what I decided to do with it, within the limits of the current frame and the small amount of time we have to get it finished. It still has a lot of cleanup work to do. I have to finish the welding and then clean all that back off.

For reference, this is what the original looks like.

My friend "StoffelKeere " did a really good job on the front kick panels in the last post. To let everyone know all posts form me and "StoffelKeere" are of the same car. He really has some skills in fabricating and I could not have attempted this project without him. Here are the rest of the pics of the Kubel that I have to bring this thread up to date:
