I had NHS do this for my '56 ghia

| That speedo is not for a split bug. 160 Km (100mph) is way out of split bugs range. |

So what you tell me is: The top speed on the speedometer is the actual speed the car can go - well - my daily driver car say 240 km/t - but i will never reach it even in free fall with that car _________________ Dont eat the yellow snow... |

Yeah, it looks a little bit like a re-worked face, at least in the pic. But who knows, nice find at any rate. The legend continues.... _________________ John Henry

The face color came up a little bit because of a bad degreased ground during production in 1952 I think. Let´s ask some old VDO employees in the nursing home what has happend. This original trip speedo was found inkl. four "normal" NOS split speedos (all in the original box) at a vw dealer fifteen years ago here in Germany. Thanks for all the nice PM´s since yesterday.... _________________ _________________

Great thread..!
I think the Norwegian friend has something closer to the real thing.
I also have doubts about the maximum speed issue, but let's all pay attention to a detail :
The line I marked with arrows is flat, just like the upper side (below the odometer) that makes me think that the faceplate had been printed accordingly, so that the cut holes for the trip meter wouldn't intersect with the lines. Note that on the other photos, only the top portion is a flat line, because of the odometer. And the lower section of that circle is round, even though the trip meter is there. And that creates an impression that those trip meters are added later.
(NOTE: I have very limited knowledge about splits, so I may be incorrect.) _________________ http://karakalemportre.weebly.com/ --> My Dad's Artistic Work - Check it out..!

Saw this in the ad section.
From this ad: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=99916
Might be for a barn door bus, but I would SWAG that it would be unlikely that VDO would be making trip speedos for buses but not for bugs in 1950.
Although it does not discount the theory that VDO may have done trip upgrades subsequent to initial manufacture. |
