bought this one from a samba vendor , he didn`t know if it was for real or not , then he told me it indeed was and charged me 550 bucks for it ....

i have received it today , and i don`t think it is , brass ends , nice finish and black paint under the gray finish paint.....i believe it is one of K-N knock offs ....what do you think ??

That jacket is far too nice to be real.

I would expect to see casting marks, pits, seams, lumps and bumps on an original one. the ends where the tubes exit should not have filing marks on them.

Intake ends should also be cast and not bronze I think.

Welds around riser flange are too nicely done and smooth, bolt holes in the flange are champfered which I don't think is correct.

My vote is it's a fake (reproduction).

Definitely not original. There is no evidence of the sand cast jacket, nor a seam, it looks heavily machined and polished. Original jackets were very pitted, the sprue location on the top right side could always be seen and their were often voids in places.

No logos under the endcastings and they were all made of steel, not brass.

File marks on the ends of the endcastings and what looks like an epoxy filler used where the heat riser tubes enter the jacket. The contours on the backside are not correct.

Just my opinion of course, but I have had my hands on at least a dozen of those, and currently have 3 or 4 of them.

If you do feel you got hosed, Ricardo, make sure you post in the buyer/seller feedback forum.

But its ok to pay $1,200 for a repro horn ring and $650 for a repro Telefunken face plate?

Just curious where the line gets drawn.

I think thats a bit harsh. Everyone knows what they get with split parts unlimited, repro. Very good repro. I personally am happy to buy it and have done when I can't get/ afford the genuine. Ricardo does fine work and doesn't rip anyone off! Without him I'd be a lot further of a finished split bug.

Which reminds me Ricardo do you do reflectors for my 56 bus??

Looks like an old repro, maybe? KN's have only been out a year or 2, that one you have looks like it has been around the block longer than that. It could be an original with new feet installed and someone sanded and polished up the casting? Who has some pics of the KN manifold to post??

I don't know who else repro'd them. The KN one is here and the back is not the same as yours.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=226897

Who knows what you got?? Doesn't look original OR like a KN repro...

I would guess it's an original with a lot of "work" done to it... my opinion.

Would have to be a repro of the endcastings are brass. Its not like the original endcastings "go bad" or anything.

I don't see any signs of it being a tooled reproduction, its likely a DIY backyard foundry job starting with an original intake section, its been done before a few times. The brass flanges appear brazed on actually, and the K heat risers can be bent up pretty easy with an average harbor freight tool. Not a bad job actually but clearly not an original.

Its possible the seller didn't know what it isn't, as selling it to you as an original would be risky given you are fairly well known in what you do and how you do it, etc. I'd just try to work out returning it for a refund, and if you sense it was honest mistake maybe you both should just split the return shipping, will just make things go alot smoother, good luck.

The original jacketed K endcastings were brazed onto the intake runner. You would not able to braze a brass endcasting to a steel intake runner, unless the endcasting were actually bronze, or similar alloy with higher melting temp. And bronze does not have good binding properties with brass.

The later 701E endcasting can be used, but is has to be machined for a smaller diameter to fit the 25hp head.

The pic below shows the 36hp endcasting (left) and JK (right)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The 36hp endcastings were also flared for better flow, unlike the JK where you can see the tubing end.

Ricardos pic of the underside does not appear to be a 36hp.

Low temp brazing can fuse brass to steel, and its structurally reliable, at least enough for this application, braze 450 rods or maybe just silver soldering with one of the higher temp solders. From the pictures I'd say its either one or the other that was used, it wasn't welded though thats clear.
