took my 67 fasty about 2 years ago from DC to Wisconsin

about 825 miles each way

i checked and adjusted the valves before each leg

did 70+ the whole way and averaged right around 27-28 MPG

1600 dual carbs

that was on an OG engine with 79,XXX miles on it
that had been sitting for 11 years
(i only had it on the road 3 months before the trip)

I drove my '66 squareback on a 1500 mile round trip last year no problems. I drive both a '68 & '66 squareback daily no problems. I always carry tools/spare parts just in case. I put over 13,000 miles on my '66 squareback in about 18 months, only had to be towed once due to broken clutch pedal. Just keep the routine maintenance up & VW's are really reliable. I also look in the engine compartment at least 2 times a week to check for fuel leaks.

Had to reply to this one. My square gets driven all over and it is my only long distance car. It gets driven through mountains and deserts in extreme cold and 115 degree heat. My other VW's might be "phatter" but my type 3 is what I rely on for long distances.

Vw's are amazing machines....

went on a long distance trip with a friend a few years back..

some how he didnt tighten his rocker arms down well enough and they started rattling and pinging so loud we thought the car was gonna blow up....

pulled out a wrench on the highway and tightend them down enough to make it home... i sware these cars can be unstoppable...

I daily drove my 67 squareback for 5 years without major incident- about 100,000 miles on that one.

I daily drove my 77 bus with 1776cc and dual webers for 4 years- about 80,000 ,miles- rarely an incident...

I even daily drove my panel van (the black one) when it was an original ruby red panel van with 1493cc for 3 or 4 years and did many miles on it.

I don't think it's fair to say the cars were 100% reliable but the more you drive them, the more you get to understand how they are running and you can often pre-empt failures. I can't explain why, but every air cooled VW I have ever owned eventualy talks to me and I can tell whats going to happen or when it's in need of attention. Strange and doesn't make much sense but it does happen. Sort of like bonding to a new friend!
