I have to say it. . .why would you leave stuff in it when you're getting a respray? I wouldn't trust anyone to pull the stuff out or to mask it off. Especially if, and I don't know the arrangements, it was a low budget job.

Aside from that, it looks to me like a decent job overall. I am just hopeful I can do even close to that good of a job on my own.

I really can't complain at 3.5K body work investment. I've seen the same work done for over 10K. If you look at the early "as delivered" photos you'll see he had to cut & weld in a fair amount and the welds are beads completely across the sections not tacked in. I'm also very pleased with his finish work which is nearly flawless I checked this job out weekly and I cannot find the sections he replaced because he is that good. I can live with over spray with a body job like this for the price I paid. Once again you get what you pay for.

I'm going to be OK with this bus because I'm not looking for a show winner I just want a clean safe camper to camp with I would have been happy with an OG bus actually preferred because we all know the parking anxiety involved with a "new" paint job Cool

If a new paint job causes me too much stress as I dodge the careless on the road I'll sell it for an OG or Rat Rod camper.

make sure you clean up the inside of that sidewall where the rocker was welded on. Don't put the interior panels up and leave it like that, even scuffing it up and painting rustoleum on it would be something...

Seam sealer, then primer. Why would you not spend the $10.
My bet is that there is a tube's worth of missing or cracked seam sealer in that bus in the engine compartment, nose and wheelwell area anyway. Might as well do it all at once, especially if the bus is to be driven on roads that are salted in the winter.

Hi boys & girls I'm in Albuquerque right now visiting my aunt for teachers convention weekend. This area is awesome, dry and warmer than the east coast.

Chris what do you mean about that nose? Yes yes I'll seal & paint but more tips needed.

Jack up the bus and look under the nose of the bus--the back side of the valance area. That whole area is a mess of seams. It was all seam-sealed from the factory. It's a certainty that the seam sealer is either loose, cracked or missing now. It needs to be renewed, along with the seam sealer that protects all the seams in the wheelwell area. There is an extremely vulnerable area at the forward end of the rocker where the B-pillar terminates, the back side of the wheelwell joins the crossmembers and the jack point all come together. It gets hammered by rocks and salt spray. It was all seam-sealed and really should be undercoated on a bus that will ever be driven in the rain.

I'll put seam sealer on every joint or overlap and I am assuming if an overlap weld is done such as that inner rocker the sealer will help keep moisture out? Yes I will undercoat the wheel well areas because this will not be a garage queen we will use her for what she was designed for "camping". I just received the pillar for that spot in the photo and hoping Brian can score me a 5 X 5 piece of floor so I can weld that up. I will have to go through the entire bus to check for spots missed as this was a 3.5K job and I know if I leave it for the finishing touches of the interior welding spots I won't see paint on this bus for another 12 months. I have enough room in the garage to finish up the job.

Does anyone know how long that 2 part epoxy paint lasts in a spray bottle? I can't see the mess of using my large spray gun for a 1 ft square paint job so I think I'll buy some of those disposable bottles for the finish work on the interior. Or get one of those touchup guns. I hope when I get home from out here in New Mexico the bus is finally painted but I won't hold my breath.

New Mexico is beautiful but I haven’t seen a VW Bus or any VW's here in Albuquerque which is very disapointing but we haven’t exactally been looking ether.

I just learned where my ancestors, the Eckert's & Grunthaner's, "homeland" in Germany is. We are from Bavaria, a town called Kühlenfels, Germany 3.4 hrs from Wolfsburg & 4.5 miles from Westphalia. Sounds like a future international road trip to me Cool

Stephen & I played phone tag and unfortunately didn't get a chance to meet. But we are driving our bus out this summer and will catch up then.

Yes on the masking off my bad.

I'll be at the shop today and post updates tonight.

Now that I got a good view of NM my next bus will be from there, Phonex (visiting my uncle there in the summer too) or CA (visiting my other aunt there). If I don't like the job on this bus I'm selling it and flying out west for my next bus which of course I should have done in the first place.

I'll also post pics of Albuquerque later.

greetings from NM. I am really surprised to hear you say you havent seen any VW's here. this place is littered with them. only a few of us drive our buses daily, except the bay window crowd, lots of those on the roads, but bugs are everywhere. I can think of around 10 that are within a 1/2 mile of me. I guess it also depends on what part of town you are in.

sounds like you have some connections out there now Linda. Like you said thats good for either when you travel out there with your bus or have to look for a "dry" bus.
