If you need it, I have the Bay bus parts book Digitized, (through 72 I think) and several "other" Bay bus books digitized.
If you need a dead tree edition, I have some of those in various condition too.
Also, if you need a distributor, I can probably rebuild you the proper one, or rebuild yours.
The factory Body manual shows a Bay bus laying on its side, repairing the frame.
It was a recommended procedure, since the were unibody. _________________ There are 4 boxes to use in the defense of liberty: soap, ballot, jury, ammo. Use in that order. Starting now. |

My "other" VW is also a T3.
Hopefully, I'll be driving it sometime before the end of the world! _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

Hey Jason! I need that dee-strib-ew-tehr....
By the way, anyone have any pointers for wading through the Bay Window Forum? I am scared... |
Don't.
Too much half- assed misinformation in there. They have their own way of doing things, which makes me want to call Malachi Martin and have him do an exorcism on that forum almost every time I visit it.
Maybe I'm just too much of a regimented German, I don't know. It just seems there are two simultaneous schools of thought running in there: Doing it once and doing it right; vs. Mickey- Mouse-ing things to make them work, with no thought to any consequences down the road. What's really sad about it is that doing it right sometimes actually takes less time and energy and actually saves you money in the long run, but there are certain "experts" in there that you can't tell anything to.
I mean, it's one thing if you're in the middle of nowhere and the belt breaks, you don't have a spare, and you use K8's pantyhose as a makeshift belt to get you to the next town, but too much baling wire and duct tape type shit seems to be sort of approved as actual repairs there. I left the last time when I got shouted down for daring to suggest that maybe getting the factory distributor, installing it, and setting timing to factory specs is better than jamming any old distributor in and setting it at 3000 RPM. You should have seen the sh*tstorm that caused.
If you get stuck on something, PM Kiefernet or Ratwell. There are a couple other people in there who seem to know what they're doing as well. Just don't fall for all the "the factory is wrong, Bentley sucks, the factory didn't allow for 40 years of wear" ( my personal favorite), etc. type bullshit.
You'll probably get better advice in the T3 forum otherwise. |
OK, I feel a lot better now. I've been reading up over there, trying to immerse myself and kept re-reading some of that crap in disbelief.
Nice to hear it's not just me.
On a somewhat related topic, the local VW parts vendor was trying to tell me the same thing about bay window folks when I picked up the first round of bearings and front brake bits:
"they're not like the split window crowd, or even bug people. they seem to mainly live in their busses, smell bad and they don't give a crap about doing it right, just getting to the next town.
And they keep trying to trade me hemp necklaces for parts!" |
Dont worry, it makes 3 of us. There are a couple of strong sound voices in there, but for the most part kinda feels like Im in a room full of people that are one can short of a six pack, both ores not in the water, not the brightest bulbs........
Im may get some crap for that one right there _________________ Jason "notchboy" Weigel

In all honesty thats what I had invisioned this thread to be-but not just for the bus mind you. Information and questions in reguards to "your other flame-from the T3 owners perspective". Makes it T3 relavant and cozy for you jimmy _________________ Jason "notchboy" Weigel

Here he is in all of his glory.... I introduce to you the new member of our family.... George the Double Cab.
And here again with Maggy....
Maggy hasnt weighed in yet as to her feelings about her new younger/bigger brother, but the last time I got another ACVW (Maddy the '67 squareback, RIP), she pitched a fit and stopped working for two weeks. We are hoping that she wont get all butt hurt about George because now my lovely fiance SquareKate gets to drive her... but we'll see how that goes . _________________ Jim in Sacto -

The 67 square was broadsided/totalled about two years ago... All of us in the Seattle crew mourned her loss.

Actually it was sorta after you and my old time friend who has had the same bus since he graduated HS in '89 with whom I spent an inordinate amount of time travelling in his camper... It was actually Rose, my daughter that picked the name. _________________ Jim in Sacto -

Well, crap.
Looks like I just joined the ranks of VW Pickup Truck ownership, albeit against my will.
Owner of this one had me completely restore it (except for the bed, which he mandated diamond plating for the inside of the gates and bedliner in the bed since he used the truck for his business), but had a stroke in the middle of the project. His recovery has been way longer and more expensive than anyone could have foreseen, plus he lost his tuchus in mutual funds. Long story short, I wound up with some cash, plus the truck.
Not what I wanted, as I probably had 600 hours into this thing, but it's better than a kick in the teeth. It's a July 1957.
