I'm rebuilding my motor and while I have it out I am looking at the clutch components to see what needs replacing. I know I am going to do the clutch disc, throw out bearing, and tranny mounts. Is it necessary to replace the clutch cover if it is in good condition? Or should it be resurfaced like the Flywheel? Thanks.

I'd say if the clutch was not slipping, just replace the disc and the throw-out bearing. That's what I do. and the mounts, like you said.

If the clutch WAS slipping, then do all including resurfacing the flywheel.

Sounds good, the clutch wasn't slipping so I think I'll keep it. Thanks for the advice.

Is this a decent kit?

http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=KF22401

While searching I've read not to use Brazilian but others seem to indicate it is OK (It appears SACHs can be either Brazilian or German), if this is OK and at this price I thought I may as well do it all. Anybody currently running this kit?

My Sach (Brazilian) failed in my car. The PP side completely disintegrated. Stock motor. The flywheel side of the disc looked like new. It was weird.

As far as a PP, they aren't that expensive, even a good KEP stage I. Why not do it now and not worry about it? The springs/tangs may fatigue over time so unless you know the age of you PP, I'd suggest you just do it now. Of course, I'm always replacing things that don't need replacing. Preventative maintenance, I guess.

Yea, that's kind of what I decided. I thought about that kit but I think I am going to assemble my own since searching info on Brazilain clutch parts I found the throw-out bearings are not recommended. I've priced higher quality alternative parts cheaper than the complete Brazilain kit.

Clutch Disc - Valeo
Pressure plate - Amortex (Brazil) Not sure about KEP is that Kennedy?
Throw-Out Bearing - SACHS (German)

My mechanic used a Luk clutch set in my B2200 truck about 5 years ago, and I like that; I'm going to be installing a Luk clutch set into my Frontier truck as well (original now slipping). So have you investigated a Luk clutch kit for your transporter?

If yours is a 1971 (from your posted Bus Depot link): Luk 17-014 http://catalog.schaeffler-aftermarket.us/results.p...ngine=1.6L

Actually it is for my '73 SB which is why I thought I'd post over here instead of on the Bay forum. I did find in my research that LUK is considered the best and normally I always get the best parts but in this economy, well you know, we are all trying to save a buck or two. I always get confused when buying parts for these things because half the time I hear Brazilian is no-good and the other half the time it is. My goal right now is to get it back on the road and be reliable. JBugs says the Valeo disc is great quality and they won't sell Brazilian TO bearings but apparently the Braz pressure plates are OK so this will have to do for now. Later on when I'm back working full-time I'll look into a LUK kit if this setup isn't working out. Thanks guys for all your help.

I have had exceptional luck with the LUK clutch parts. Very high quality and they serve the majority of Auto manufacturers as well.

EDIT: I have been made aware of what is being sold here in the states is called "New Generation" from LUK. I will have to rescind my endorsement until I find out what that means. These kits are selling for less than wholesale from LUK Germany so I am suspicious of origin.
