| Year, engine size? There wasnt anything like that on mine and I havent seen much like that on a lot of pictures around here. Was it an add-on option for cold weather? |

All years. All engines. All sizes. Factory thermostat. If yours doesn't have it, it should. Necessary to not only aid in engine warm-up on cold days, but the flaps help control the flow of air over the cylinders and heads, aiding in cooling. The flaps are doghouse/non-doghouse fan shroud specific. _________________

Those are just more of those useless parts VW put on our cars. Thermostats are for sissies and we should take them out of all cars.

| Got any pics of the parts on the engine so I can see the relationship of everything to each other? |

Eh, searches are for sissies
ITS A JOKE!
Thanks for the pic. Purely speculation but the kickout in the linkage that would be forward of the engine is what makes it specific to doghouse vs non doghouse correct? A non doghouse im guessing will be mostly straight? |

No. Doghouse fan shrouds are thicker than non-doghouse shrouds. So...the flaps are different. As is the fan itself, which I mentioned earlier. _________________

Sorry to se some getting bent out of shape on other peoples opinions.
I just wish when I had a bug (58)in 59 that I had known more about it and had a resource like SAMBA to go to, I would not have burned a valve and would have known how to do a complete tune up myself and not have to take it to a garage to have it repaired.
Thanks for all the good info here.
I just bought a 69 and my wife says I am restoring it but I just call it making it road worthy.
Thanks guys!!! |

Trying to put a doghouse cooler on non-doghouse cylinder tin? Maybe trying to fit a non-doghouse shroud over a doghouse? _________________

Correct. When you see the two up close, you'll know what I mean. It's not a subtle difference. _________________

| Im sure I will, but as you already know I have 1 of 1 type so I have nothing to compare it to. The car had it on, obviously the car ran and still could so I had no reason to doubt any of the equipment that was on it. |
