According to the WSJ article, she was paid for the loss and bought another VW. A camper. Which is what she was turning the original into when it was stolen. She got a good deal.

It was a bench seat model. I still have the vin plate. It had a 1776 with dual 40 webs. Someone has to know someone who knows someone who used to hang out with someone who knew someone who had a cousin who knows someone who took it. I only had liability insurance at the time (starving college student) I would give my left nut to get it back.
I think you'll be keeping your left nut.

I always figured it made its way into Mexico being that the border was only a couple hours drive from Newport...Either that or Japan. Japan was loading up on buses back then...

The London Bridge is in AZ and the Bus was sold in CA and found in CA so I would say no.

I have been following this thread closely but have not commented. I too got about 10 phone calls and emails when the story broke because I am big into ACVW's and I work for Allstate. I am an Allstate agent in NC.

Anyway, this is Allstate's only "official" media release to date that I am aware of and this was sent out to agents/employees on Monday, 11/16.

"On October 16, 2009, a 1965 Volkswagen Bus reported stolen 35 years ago in Spokane, Washington, was recovered by U.S. Customs officials in Los Angeles.

The unique 1965 "hippie van" was discovered during an inspection of a freight container being exported to the Netherlands.

The vehicle was reported stolen in 1974 by Allstate customer, Michelle Carlson, a resident of Washington State. At that time, Allstate settled the claim. During the past couple of weeks, there has been a great deal of interest in this V.W. Bus and Allstate appreciates why people are so passionate about it. It's a beautiful vehicle with a unique story.

However, there are gaps in this bus' long and complex history that includes many owners across several states; therefore Allstate is conducting an investigation in cooperation with local law enforcement to determine the best course of action for the vehicle.

It's in the best interest of everyone involved to have all the questions about this unique car's history resolved before any steps are taken.

In the meantime, the bus is being well cared for and protected in a secure storage facility.

To assist you with customer inquiries, please refer to the story above."

I haven't seen this posted and just thought I'd ad this bit of info. If anymore info comes out I will update.

Perfect... great info. Now it's time to lock this thread until allstate finishes investigating.

So does anybody know of a website where you can actually do a VIN check on older vehicles?

Hey, I've got money riding on how long this thread will go on.

So the question at hand currently is...The proposed link above is stated as being the one that CA used to discover that the bus was stolen eons ago. If that is true, then how was the discovery possible if the link is supposedly good for only 5 years back? Eh?

How could that be. That database says it is only good for the last five years, and the bus was stolen 35 years ago??

I tried running the VIN of a wrecked car that I sold to a big SoCal salvage yard through that database and it comes up pure as the driven snow. Take a negative result with a big grain of salt.
