i have a '69 with wide five's right now. i'd like to change to disc brakes(all the way around if possible). thing is i don't want the wide five pattern. all the rims i like are for the 5-112mm pattern. what years have this pattern and would it be a pain in the ass to change it over. thanks
mike

I recently converted to front disc on my 70. I took the entire front end off and replaced it with one from a lowered 72. It was tedious getting all the interferances out of the way, but once me and my buddy got the cables disconnected and brake lines clear, it was a matter of swapping out the whole front end. Eight bolts. This is the cheapest way to go and not too difficult. I was lucky to get the donor bus for $150.00 and all the brake parts were fairly new before the guy rolled the bus. If you have the money, California Import Parts has the disc conversion kit for about a grand.
I also had to switch out all the rear axle stuff so I could have the same bolt pattern all the way around, but that part was simple.
I'm no pro and only halfway mechanical, so anyone can do this. It took two good full days of work to complete and a couple of hours here and there. Some of the time was wasted trying to take short cuts that cost us more time when we learned it wouldn't work. Take your time, do it right and it's all worth it. I should have moved the fluid resevoir from under the dash to behind the seat because the master cylinder is further back, but didn't. Now the tube to the master cylinder is extra long and was difficult to bleed.
Now I need a nice set of wheels. I'd also like to build a bigger, faster engine to match my stopping power. It was all worth it!
