Howdy TheSamba Very Happy !

I will also inform you guys overhere on the updates of my 1964 beetle!
Slammed, narrowed, Empi's, nice!

I bought the car as standard as can be and it was restored about 15 years ago. The last 8 years of its life it stood still in a garage. Perfect! We got there in style with two bugs and brought the bug to its new house, where it spends the night with a 1959, 1960 and 1984 beetle.

Of course this did not last long... A real bug has to be groundscraping low, so we started the project...
5" narrowed front beam, dropped spindles and three outersplines in the back! That should get him scraping alright! Very Happy

Already put on some small details like US rear lights, fog lamp on the bumper, removed the chrome trim above the decklid and removed those silly eyebrows above the headlights...
Then it rolled out of the garage like this! We needed to change the front wheels with another bug, because the original wheels didn't fit in the fenders anymore, nice!

Then my generator broke down... We took the whole engine out the fix this and while we were at it, we might as well just continue cleaning etc.!

GOT NEW WHEELS! Yeah, finally sits the way i wanted! Empi 5 spokes, powdercoated in pearl white. 5.5" all around, with 145/65 in the front and 185/65 in the back. The rear tires rubbed as hell on the inside, so I got some 1" spacers to fix that.

We started rebuilding the engine again, after cleaning it on the outside and the inside. And while the engine was out, I replaced my gearbox rubber mounts, the old ones were kind of loose!

And just because i love this picture: Very Happy

All my powdercoated parts came back, yay! Now I can continue the engine again!

While fixing the engine I bought a set of US bumpers and some US spec front blinkers. Looks bad ass in my opinion! Cool

Time to install the engine again! It was the first time for me to take out an engine and rip it apart, so I was kind of nervous when I had to switch the key....... But it worked like a charm! Just needs some adjustments to the carburator, etc.

That's all for today, come back later for the exciting episodes of '64 Ruby!

Cheers mates! Cool

Nice post! I was having 1988 VWTrends flashbacks, but in a good way.

Ruby looks good.

I like it. Throw some RedLines or a red stripe on the wheel to set it off.

Your car looks perfect - the color, wheels, condition, and MOST importantly, the ride height are spot on! If I built a bug that's the exact stance I'd run.

One big issue though - your car is a '65. Big windows with later style (diagonal) vent windows, windshield wipers, angled seat backs, and press button decklid give it away. Not saying that's a bad thing, just letting you know.

I was going to suggest the same thing. I like the looks of this, the unusual color of the rims really set it off.

Thanks guys, glad you like it as much as I do! I wouldn't have changed a damn thing if you didn't, but still! Laughing

The redlines ain't gonna happen. I though of it, but 145/65 tires on a 5.5" wheel make the tire kind of stretched...
You can't get those redline rings to work with stretched tires...
I already changed the Empi logos on the wheels to black/red Wolfsburg logos.

Volkswagen started building these 'big-window-cars' in 1964. To be exact, in August 1964.
My car is from September 1964, so it is definitely not a '65!
I know you probably mean it is the '65 model, but I don't quite like the sound of '65! '64 sounds a lot older, hehe.

Ah, okay, just making sure you know. The United States as a whole is pretty fixated on model year, so that's what I go by. My squareback has a 1966 build date, but since it's a '67 model year, that's what I call it. To each their own.

Not trying to push redlines on you, but if you did want to make the move from a stretched tire to a square one, 175/55 would fit perfectly for your 5.5" rims. Nothing wrong with a little stretch though...

175/55 is NEVER going to fit in my front fenders on this height!
My front axle has been narrowed 5", my turning radius already is 25meters or something like that, because the tires will rub like hell on the front fenders. Laughing
With 175/55 I will only be able to drive straight forward, would be nice to make some turns every now and then. Wink

Actually, the 65 model year started in Aug. Just like my Dec 66 Bug is a 67 model. And a Sep 65 would've been a 66. You can find all that info in the tech section, but your car is in fact a 65.

Bro, are you sure about that? One of my friends is running a 5" beam with 175/55s on his '57 with no rubbing issues.............??

edit: He's running Radar repops......not sure of the offset, tho.
