Do you guys just use a regular rubber block to sand the body of a bug? Most of the areas on the bug are curved so just wondering if there are any special methods (ie. styrofoam)? Just wondering if a block will not flatten or cause too many high/low spots on the curved bug body, fenders etc..
Thanks!

I've seen guys hand sand or block sand curved panels in my time. Both can lead to problems if done incorrectly. Personally, if I were to block, I'd use one of Meguire's more flexable foam blocks over a rubber one. I guess if you're careful you can hand sand too. Try to keep your hand as flat as possible and never run your fingers parallel with your sanding strokes. This can lead to subtle "plow marks" from your fingers.

I use the 1” thick and about 12" long foam sanding sponges you get at home depot. They seem to have the right flexibility for the curves on a Volkswagen but work on the flat spots as well. You can get them up to 600 grit but mostly sold in the rougher grades. However, I just wrap my paper around them to get the grade I need. The abrasive on the sponge is a good bite for the paper so it won’t slip.

Just got a new flexible 16" sanding block from Eastwood Co. It uses 2 3/4" wide stick-on paper. The stiffness is varied by adding or removing stainless steel rods. It's supposed to be ideal for sanding cars with compound curves like VWs. When I've had a chance to try it out, I'll post an evaluation.
