is that the motor from the 59? did you freshen it up?

Not yet Ron. I think I might have narrowed down who I might ask to rebuild it though. Can't wait to get it in there, although the the motor it's got is pretty amazing so far!

Was thinking about you as I drove up towards Yucca Valley on my way to Havasu!! Smile

I can envision it now all done. Is the top going to need scraping also?

Hey Barry! I am planning on posting a diagram of what I'm seeing in the Jupiter spot. There are some odd things that I'm seeing, and that's why I'm not as optimistic as I was starting out. Hasn't dampened my spirits to get Vern done though! The top will need scraping as well since the Chestnut Brown was sprayed with White. That coat seems much thinner than the Yellow though.

True true.

As you can imagine, I've had a bunch of people recommending various chemicals as the faster way to go. I'm sure that's true, but there are a few reasons why I haven't gone that way yet.

First, I have a lot more control over the process this way. I know it doesn't seem right, but there really isn't any damage to the original paint with my method (thanks to Dave K. for the strategy!). I don't always have the same space to work on it, so I'm using a method that I can do about anywhere. I just put down a cheap tarp and it catches 90% of the yellow (my face catches the other 10%).

Second, to your point about the mythical value of original paint. I agree, to a point. But when I started this process, the paint that I was exposing looked like it was brand-freakin'-new! If I could be assured that the entire bus would look like that, I'd scrape it off with my fingernails if need be. It was that amazing. I have no problem doing a respray if needed, but an original paint bus is always going to be worth more than a respray. Of course the flip side of that is I'm not a fan of those cars that have two square inches of original paint and the rest is surface rusted away. Patina is fine...but I've seen some pretty liberal definitions of that.

If I keep seeing interstellar activity (i.e. more Jupiter spots and worse) I'll most likely switch to some chemicals to speed it up and see what's all under there. I do plan on pulling out the middle seat, the carpet and trying some chemicals on the floors to see what it's like under there.

Of course, if I REALLY want to speed it up, I'll bust out a D.A. and have at it, right!? Smile

I really do appreciate all the advice and comments. It's a fun process and a great bus to drive in the meantime. I'll be at OCTO in Feb if anyone wants to see it in person. Hard to miss with the neon yellow! heheh

what i found when doing my kombi is the chemical stripper reacts differently to the laquer...it bubbles the later urethane paint off quick and the laquer it doesnt do much to until A LONG amount of time...i hear you on the theory of why you are scraping it like you are but at least swing in home depot buy a can of stripper and get grey 3m scotch brite pads at your local auto body supply shops and dont confuse them with the ones at home depot they are too coarse....grey is the only way....try it.look at my original post in here and follow the thread it works and gives you great results.

Oh don't worry, I've got a can of Jasco under my sink! Smile I'm ready to go that route. I do need to find a local auto body supply shop for the grey 3m pads though.

Hopefully Vern, Scott, & John all make it up to the Vintage Meet in Seattle this year, it should be a good time.

I couldnt agree more with doing it your way, you have the time, but mainly thats how you want to roll.............as far as paint goes, OG is alot cheaper and in my opinion looks better than repaint "luster and that new paint shine" ...keep up the good work

A friend came over today and shared his technique. We first did a small section under the passenger floor mat and that came out pretty good. We then did a little work on the inner rear apron and that came out amazing! So I went and picked up some goodies and tried my own hand on the block off plate.

Still needs some polishing, and there's some bare metal showing. But I'd rather look at mostly red than all yellow any day.

This was done with chemical stripper (Aircraft Peeler that I got at Pep Boys) and took about 30 min. I want to get back into the engine compartment, I think that's going to look pretty awesome.

The yellow paint is about an inch thick (ok not really, but it's THICK!). I'm going to try this stuff on some of the primer I've exposed, but it's possible that for the large areas I might continue with the chisel method for the yellow. But I think this is going to be the way to go around the windows where the white paint is super thin.

Hey Philip,

I need to post some more photos up. I've done a fair amount of work on the driver's side. There's a lot of the little bare metal spots showing up though. Sad But I'm still scraping, removing. I figure that the very least I'm getting it down to a nice base for a respray if it comes to that.

I plan on doing a bunch of work on it over Thanksgiving weekend. I'll post start, progress and final pix up!

I think I may spend that weekend working on the upper half for a change. The white paint seems to be a lot thinner than the yellow, so I might go with chemicals there. We'll see. Does Jasco mix well with cranberries?

Hey Scott- Beware of Jasco on thin paint, it is really strong and will eat to bare metal really quickly if you're not careful. I'd strongly suggest starting with something much milder, likely Easy Off, on thin paint. Move up as needed but don't start at the deep end!
