what can I use instead of the conventional grinding wheel to smoothen out my welds? I am a bit concerned after welding in my ragtop section that the surrounding metal will get too thin as I grind it down.

And it will FAST if you are not carefull.

Use a FLAPPER wheel instead of a grinding wheel, and stay with a 120 grit and go slow. They produce less heat, and work great.
Get it as flat as possible and maybe even tap it down a little and blend in with filler.

i use a cut-off tool with a cutting wheel to get the majority of it down. if you are careful you can avoid hitting the metal surrounding the weld, then use a 3" 36 grit roloc disc on a die grinder to get the remaining weld down.

I have one of those flapper discs.I noticed that it does an excellent job at smoothing the welds down. my grinder was burning my metal. live and learn I guess.

I think y flapper disc is 90 grit. I'll pick some 120 grit up also.

thanks

I use a hard wheel to take the bulk of the material off and switch to a flap disk when I get close to the body level. The flap disk works good on the small raised weld bead and doesn't cut in to the broad sheet metal surface hardly at all.

Jim, what do you mean a "hard wheel" I have heard many people speak about it but I dont think I ever saw one.

A hard wheel is just the term used for the Carborundum gringing disks.
Soft wheel would be a flapper.
