I am not an expert or a experienced builder but I liked the way this engine fitted in the car. I used a 2.5 SOCH, all that I had to do is drilling out the side covers and the front balance covers and the engine fit perfectly.

if you liked that then you'd love the EJ18, 20 and 22 then
they fit without haivng to cut the body
they all have the same stroke where as the Ej25 is longer so thats why it interferes
just another reason i went the 22 over the 25
all my original engine seal strip is still attached so i can put a vw engine back in with no mods

So does a stock ECU come with the crate motors or do you have to buy one (after market or stock) no matter what? _________________ First car orange '72 class 11 lookalike |

I'll assume that by crate motor, you are referring to a Japanese Domestic Motor (JDM). Some come with the ECU, some don't. Your best option is to buy a front cut that is basically the car from the dash up to the front bumper. That way you get everything needed for a conversion. I bought a motor with no ecu and then was lucky enough to get a used Link ecu on Ebay that was used on a sandrail for $400.00. It plugged right into my engine. I haven't started it yet so I'll see what happens eventually.
The stock ecu requires a speed sensor either on the speedometer cable or rear axle to tell the ecu that the car is running so the ecu stays out of limp mode. The aftermarket ECUs give you more power and tuning ability and usually don't need the speed sensor. _________________ 67 Beetle Build Thread

its only the later OBDII engines that go into limp mode with no VSS
i ran mine for a while without one and my mates bug with a 96 WRX engine doesnt have one eiter
doesnt do anything except bring the check engine light on when coasting at speed
but yea the later ones spack out without one
especially on dynos if the front wheels arent turning and its driven off the speedo cable
thats why i build my VSS on my rear axle _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Bwaaaahahahaha!
I love the lables on the ECU. Maybe if I stencil "MegaSquirt" onto my Tec-GT, it will run worth a lick... _________________

Why not just make a custom set of wires with a Y splice in them. Then you could just run one distributor. |

Ok here it is, I contacted outfront again...
Now that I think of it its pretty simple...
They sent me a subaru selinoid which allows a vacume leak...
You see where I am going with this?
If you have the EMS setup you have outputs that can be used to control the selinoid.
Just set the desired temp to open/close and your done! |

Ok been running my bug for a while about 4k total with the sub engine.
Cooling works good so far only 1 fan which means temp hangs around 190 in 70 deg weather.
No noise out of tranny as of yet.
Outfronts vancuume choke selinoid is working great, I used all my imputs on the ecm so I used the existing rear defroster switch for the selinoid and It even has a light in the cluster to tell me its on!
I looked into a sender to switch it for me but it is pretty hard to find one that is normally closed and opens at 100deg?
I am now on the search for a turbo setup, I am looking at outfronts 270hp setup?
I know a few of you guys have the turbo set up, any info on the bug install would be great. |

i have actually been thinking of running an early ea81 motor that doesnt produce much power so that i can use my stock tranny but still have an engine that will last a while i have been debating on where to run the cooling hoses . i thought about using the heater channels but i dont want to take the body off , so i htought about just running them under the car i need suggestions . |

EA81 are a good old engine,
They were very commonly fitted to baywindow busses here as type4 engines got more and more expensive to keep going
Its the torque of turbo engines that breaks trannys, that and operator abuse.
EA81 are getting pretty old though unless you can get a good one cheap look into EJ engines, the SOHC fit with no body mods and have more than double the power and life span of a EA81 plus 16 valve, twin cam and EFI make for one smooooth engine
Run you coolant lines underneath in metal
that way they wont heat up the inside of your car, your not hacking the car to bits and you also get free cooling effect from road draft _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Hey all, FYI the Subaru 5 speed gearboxes are now available for rear engined cars such as the projects in these pages.
Got a thread going here that shows how we got an EJ20T Quad Cam engine to fit under the guards and decklid of a beetle :
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=422633
They fit into a buggy/bus even easier! Now you've got even more options and don't have to baby the throttle. _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Simplistic... I love the SDS system. I hope I can get this car ready this weekend. I have been saying that for long time
Now, everyone always talk about turbo vs Supercharger... well I will find out very soon, I have decided to dress up the engine a little bit; I will be plumbing this sucker this weekend.
Regards

Since someone bumped this old thread to the top, I need to ask if this thing is running yet? Looks like a nice setup, just curious to see your supercharger plumbing?
The EJ22 in my 69 bug is pretty quick. I can only imagine how it would feel with a blower on it!

I've thought about the same set up, as I still have the Toyota supercharger same as above on my VW engine.
Main problem with it is in a beetle the decklid wouldnt fit.
the blower would have to be mounted up high above the manifold like the pic above to line up with the belts so mounting would be a pain and the said decklid issue.
A guy on ausubaru fitted one to an EJ22 in his Subaru L series and got good results.
As everyone already knows I'm a big fan of those toyota blowers, I loved it dearly on my bug but in the long run a turbo will give more bang for buck and be easier to install when it comes to a subi. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?
