Anybody successfully put disc brakes on an RGBs?
Did a search, no hits.

I know Airkewld was trying to see if there was any interest a few years back, but he didn't develop a kit due to lack of interest.
Has anyone done a homebrew kit?

I have upgraded the front to late bay discs, but would like discs all round.

Not interested in straight axle. The bull gears stay.

The first person I'd ask is Ronnie aka splitpile.
He had a set in deep development a while back.
Start there.

I can't find a rotor that will fit. Also have talked to German Auto/SACO about big nut rgb disc brakes, they use to make them but son't see them listed but did find this
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
They have them listed for 750 dollars!!!!!!!!!! Lot less dough then CSP and Airkewl for early bus spindles currentley

I just talked to German Auto/SACO and they ARE going to make the RGB rear disc brakes again, people need to call and ask to help push them along.
They make everything in house (562) 863-1123

What's the need for discs on the rear when running RGB's? Fronts are all you need.

Drum brakes are a thing of the past. Get rid of all the springs and aggravating hardware, save time and stop faster.

I'll take springs and aggrivating hardware over spending a grip for the wow factor.

My truck is a daily driver, and I drive it in agressive Houston traffic often. There is always some a$$hole who cuts in front of the guy with the bunky old VW, and it is these times I am wanting better stopping power...I am sure you have all experienced it.

Anyway I converted my bay back home to discs all round, and found it helped heaps, so I want to do my truck too, if it can be done effectively and at a good price.

When I was driving my split daily, I rear ended a stupid Citroën once that had 4 disc brakes and ABS. Stock, we can't compete with modern cars braking system. Front disc brakes are great improvement and probably enough. But in a panic braking, 4 discs would be best for sure. Or, we can chose quieter roads, drive slowly...not always possible though...

Ronnie

Do you know if they are developing a disc kit for small nut rears (pre 63)?

With the 1963 being a one year only rear, itd be nice to throw in the towel and go disc on all four.

Although I guess stepping up to big nut might be smarter

(562) 863-1123 Call and ask them. The only way they'll do this if THEY get calls asking.

Whatever. Are trying to say that an RGB bus is always slow and doesn't need good stopping power? Rolling Eyes

You won't even be able to see my disks when they are installed because I'll be running stock wheels and hub caps.
It's function over form, homie.

That's how I roll...

I can lock up all 4 wheels with stock drum brakes. The traction of the tires is the limiting factor in how fast you can stop.

4 wheel drums here, and retro rockets for those panic stops.

I slid my '65 sideways in the middle of a 3 lane road in morning rush hour traffic - with stock brakes. It's not something I'd like to do again, but it's good to know that the brakes work. If the tires hadn't broke loose from the pavement.......

I've done that before too. Your tires must be lousy. Eh?

Matter'O'factly when my tires start doing that, I get new ones! Cool
