PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2010 3:19 pm    Post subject: Vent Wing Window - Tight seal Reply with quote

This week I got a set of vent wing windows for the bus. My question is this. Is there a way to make the window (glass) seal tighter to the rubber seal on the frame. The window are in really good shape but when I lock back the window there still a tiny gap from the edge of the glass and the seal.

Any suggestions.

replace the rubber. Engine oil will make them swell. That is how the glass shop did it.

Did you shove the wedge back in when you were done installing them?

Busdaddy
Thanks for the response. Can you elaborate a little more on the wedge.

What does it do?

Is it part of the wing assembly?

Anything else feel free.

note - the wings and rubber are immaculate.

sorry - thought you were complaining about the seal between the glass and frame. Some photos would help.

The rubber is in really good condition and would rather not change it if I can avoid. Your 2 cents...

Most of the OG vent wing installations I've removed have that wedge shoved in between the frame and the door, It seems to be there to compensate for the very issue you have by forcing the frame towards the outer edge of the door and up against the rubber.

Thanks man. I'll check my doors when I pull the other vent windows. Hopefully they are still there.

If not any thoughts on where I can get a set... Confused Confused

This thread inspired me to look at my wedge situation... when I got my current '71 the windows were disassembled, and when I put them back together I didn't have any wedges in my bags of pieces parts... nor did I even know about the wedge then...

So I scavenged the two wedges from my '77 rustbucket and am going to put them in my '71. They seem to be made up of some dense plastic. If I were you I'd go to the hardware store and buy some 1/8" thick nylon (plumbing style) washers and cut them to size. It might be hard to find the size you need depending on the hardware store. I was just out in Maryland a few places looking for nylon washers and I missed my selection here at home!

Fiber washers might work as well...

I don't remember any wedges or washers on mine when putting in new seals. And everything looks, feels, seals, and works great. Probably should dig out the book.

So I had to follow up from this thread for those who may question this so called "wedge" piece. I'm actually in the middle of collecting "new" doors for the Hippo's new face lift / body make over (I'm doing the body work and shooting the Hippo in a few months).

Passenger Door

Not to shabby. Found em in Turlock for a song and dance. No rust and very straight metal.

After pulling the doors apart I remember to look for the wedge.... Tim use the force.... Ok enough of that.

I spent the better part of the afternoon looking high and low for this ellusive wedge.... Busdaddy is fucking with the Hippo.. Wink

But the next morning I was out walking around the Hippo when all of a sudden I look down at the bottom of my driveway and see this tiny piece of metal.

TAAAAAAA DAAAAAA!!! Sneaky little bastard was trying to make his escape back to the land of lost VW parts.

Thanks guys.

edit - In hind sight I wish I had logged back on to see SGKent's post. Thanks man for the pic. When I do the other door I'll be more careful looking and pulling the wings.
