Personally I like the look of the black cap. Run it till the cap pukes, use the OG as a spare... _________________ Mike

small update:
I sandblasted and redid the pedal cluster. I think it came out nice
I also sandblasted all the engine tins while I was at it (my surgeon was PISSED when he had to irrigate my incision and rewrap my wrist to get all the sand out. ) I now see that my cylinder covers need to be welded up a bit. they have some cracks that need attention. I fear that if I try to weld right now I will catch my wrap on fire and then I'll really be in trouble.

I'd just buy some new engine tin instead of welding it. It's not too expensive for new German tin. I need to pull out the ol' sandblaster and repaint my pedal cluster, but I have other worries right now.
I like the black cap and I'd like to get one because my orange cap + camo green engine tin = bleh. |

Those rims look like rocket rims. I have a set for my 74 super. If you look at the back side you should see it written somewhere. They came black and aluminum like yours. I just sanded my black smooth and then went REAL heavy with the black rust check (rustoleum) paint. The runs went to the bottom (tire laid flat) and came out real nice.
Ditto on the longer bolts though. I noticed the same thing with mine. I got a nice chrome set from CIP. Pretty cheap too.
By the way, looks great. |

I actually did the lug-bolt/lug-nut conversion yesterday and studded all the drums, so I don't have to worry about short acorn bolts now. it looks better too with the shiny new lug nuts on there. I'll post some pictures when I get home from church today if I get a chance. I hit the drums with some black paint while I had the wheels off as well.
rocket rims?? I thought they were just run of the mill 1-piece knock off empi 8-spokes. They are old though, not the newer style knock offs for sure. they have the old school round seat for the lugs. _________________ always seeking a better way

| So are mine. Mine are old, and had the rougher finish to the spokes. If you look at the hub section it should say the size and in one I believe it says "rocket". Mine have the round seats as well. These from what I can find are still EMPI knockoffs, just earlier ones. Seem to be pretty good though. |

here is a shot of the wheel after converting to studs and lug nuts. I think it looks nice, especially with the drums blacked out.

Update:
the last few days have been interesting. I got in touch with a heck of a nice guy from up in Alliance, OH and today I made it up to his shop to pick up some parts. The deal was for a set of dropped spindles but when I got there he set me up with new backing plates, wheel cylinders, bleeders and brake parts for an extra $20!! heck of a guy!
anyway, I managed to get the new spindles on and everything buttoned back up but I didn't get any pictures snapped yet since it was dark when I finished.
I did run into one annoyance. when I went to remove the soft brake lines on both sides, they wouldn't budge. my old stuff was CRUSTY so I shouldn't be surprised. but I will need to replace the soft lines now on both sides since I cut them.
I'm afraid I've opened a can of worms here.
Why do I feel like the minute I try to turn the other end of those soft lines loose that the entire junction between hard/soft line is going to collapse... I have this feeling in my gut that I will be replacing the entire braking system before this is said and done. _________________ always seeking a better way

Just a word of advice... I would replace all the lines (hard and rubber)! You don't want that Ohhhhhhh Shiiiiit feeling when you are driving your baby around! Plus it's pretty simple to change all now before you put your carpet in. My 2 cents!
By the way I'm looking forward to seeing the new stance!!! _________________ 73' Standard Bug finished - sort of

you're right about the braking system. I don't know why I'm so scared to tear out the whole system and replace it. I just hate the prospect of bleeding the system after reading about what a pain in the rear Patterbon is having with his.
by the way...you wouldn't still be interested in helping me lower the rear a spline would you?? I could also use your eye checking to make sure I didn't goof anything up in the front today putting those spindles on. _________________ always seeking a better way

I can help, no problem. I can't this weekend due to Mommy's Day, but maybe next weekend?
New brakes are cheap insurance!! Unfortunately I am more afraid of the other cars on the road!! _________________ 73' Standard Bug finished - sort of

Don't worry about it. I ended up replacing the entire system in my vert (except the hard lines) when all I REALLY wanted to do was install new carpeting! I went through nearly two quarts of brake fluid, half of that just to clean out the lines. But in the end it was fine. Make damn sure to buy an 11mm flare nut wrench for the hoses.

Great!! thanks, man. yeah, this weekend we are spending with wifey's mom and next weekend we are taking my mom to DC for the weekend. Maybe the weekend of the 22nd? that would be great. I wish I knew what was going to happen when I plop that 200 lb engine in the back. _________________ always seeking a better way

picture with the drop spindles installed. thats me in the reflection on the door! this picture makes the paint job look WAY better than it is, but I'll take it.
wifey and I conducted a little test after I took this picture. she weights about 110 lbs, which is what I assume I'll have up front, give or take, once the gas tank is installed (20 lbs) and full of gas (65 lbs), spare tire (20 lbs) is in place, and the bumper (10 lbs) is put back on. thats another 115 lbs unaccounted for. with wifey standing on the front apron the distance between the fender lip and wheel was cut in half, maybe a little more than half. I hope I don't have clearance issues with the 165s I have mounted right now. _________________ always seeking a better way

Lookin good my man! I hope the tires don't rub, that would suck! I guess try it out for awhile and see. Try only hitting the big bumps when you are driving straight down the road! lol _________________ 73' Standard Bug finished - sort of
