Pic 34-3 Solex carb / Bosch 043 905 205ZB dist / timing 10BTC / valves .06

I have a flat after shifting and when ideling along kinda flutter's (if that makes sense)
Plugs are black and fluffy....rich right? I've adjusted the carb over and over trying to go leaner but then it won't idle. I've also cleaned the jet on the right side.
So I think it may be my accelerator pump out of adjustment....
it's set in the middle and the squirt is in solid and clearing the sides but still has a stumble in my garage.
I adjusted it to the 2nd from the top which I beleive is the + but no marks on mine. Now it idles good and in the garage the stumble is gone. I have company coming soi can't go for a run but did this adjust make it richer? or leaner?

I'd say neither. Adjust the accelerator pump so it immediately starts to squirt fuel when the throttle is moved/opened. I'd check the main jet to see if it was drilled out or just a larger size.

I found this on the VW resource site:

http://vw-resource.com/accelerator_pump.html

Turn the bell-shaped adjusting segment counterclockwise (so that the retaining bolt moves clockwise in the slot in the adjusting bell) to increase the injection quantity; turn the adjusting segment clockwise to decrease injection quantity.

I moved the retaining bolt on mine clockwise or to the top of the bell which according to this should increase the flow....with the plugs already black and sooty seems like the opposite of what I need??

this morning I adjusted the accelerator pump bell all the way CCW...Adjusting bolt forward.....I watched the carb and this delays the pump but it did take my hesitation away and after a 20 drive the plugs are turning tan.

So it appears this solved my problem or did it simply mask it? All the reasearch I did said for the pump to squirt as soon as the accelerator is moved....but on mine that makes it rich and if I delay the pump it appears to burn clean...Opiions?

Your engine should be timed at 7.5 deg BTDC with the distributor you are running.

Check here: http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ignition.htm

Yes, 2.5 deg out is a lot. I'd adjust the accelerator pump properly and time it to 7.5* BTDC.

Hopefully you really mean .006.

A better way to time it is using a timing light. With the vacuum lines off and disconnected, max advance should be 30° BTDC. After setting it there (roughly 3000-3500 rpm, it will stop advancing eventually), the idle timing will come in somewhere between 5-10° BTDC. Idle timing is good to get you close but the timing light is more accurate.

Also, you may want to check to see if your heat risers are not plugged up. This will cause the symptoms described. After a few minutes of the engine running one side should be HOT while the other side should be hot but not nearly as hot. If they are both just warm to the touch they (it really) are probably clogged full of carbon.

Ehhh here we go again ? Twisted Evil
Often a carb that is unresponsive too adjustment's is Due in part or in Whole to Excessive fuel pump pressure .
Obviously if your Out of Time by 2.5 Deg. this will affect Fuel pump pressure or it's possible .
As to How Much ? Depend's .
But very common in fact so common it's becomeing an issue with me .
Excessive fuel pump pressure is the Culprit .
If your Carb is flooding over from excessive pump pressure it will cause a rich condition .
When you Give a healthy meterd squirt to an allready Fatt condition it will usually Hesitate / Hiccup .
Timming / Dwell / Fuel Pump pressure / Throttle pump adjustment should all be in Sync with each other and thought of as a whole .
One affect's the other as in Cause and affect .
You can not Properly adjust the Throttle Pump adjustment with out first addressing the Fuel Pump pressure .
You can not get a Proper Idle adjustment if Fuel pump pressure is Excessive .
List goe's on and on !
As in if you Adjust timming then you need to re- address fuel pump pressure or at least monitor it .
Stock OEM Fuel pump's are notorious for runnin 4-7 PSI but the OEM inlett valve on carb's max out around 5-6 PSI .
This is so common and Mis understood by so many V.W. Enthusuiast that I have written post after post on it .
If your not monitoring fuel pump pressure between carb and Fuel pump with a Plastic Tear drop fuel filter .
Then your Out of tune !
In fact I just coverd 70 % of the stock Bugg's out there with this Statement !
Yes runnin a Fuel filter in the Engine compartment can be a fire Hazard .
But the benefitt's far out weigh the Hazard .
If installed correctly it is no more dangerous than the fuel line itself !
The argument's are redundant at best !
Im right on this been right on this Yett Im still catchin Hell from a few of the Guy's in here .
Mostly Idiot Children but there are a few who putt up Valid argument's and I would not want them to be confused with those that just spout non sense .
Argument can be beneficial / Educational / lead to a better product etc.
How ever repeated personal attack's will no longer be tolerated !
Least not by Me ! Twisted Evil
Twisted Evil Im not Absolute Sure as of Yett but ?
I think Im about too get Paid big time ! Twisted Evil
Talk about mind boggling Stress ?
Ehh World is suppose to end in 2012 I knew I would get Blanked out of it some How ? Go Figure ! Evil or Very Mad
LMAO Sean

And why do you think installing a shitty $.99 plastic fuel filter in the engine compartment is the way to "monitor" or regulate it?

Can't imagine who those people would be... Laughing
