I'm new to vw and want to buy a bug but want to know what year they went to 12v.

1967 model year in USA for across the board 12 volt.

Second owner of each. 1988 Mazda B2200 truck, 1998 Frontier, 2014 Yukon, 2004 Frontier King Cab. 12 volt was available for special order back in the 50's, 6 volt on standards continued in Europe into the 70's and as stated, for USA export, it changed to 12v beginning with the 67 model year.

Nothing wrong with 6V if everything is working. Parts and bulbs readily available....A good 6V battery cranks an engine over just fine...only problem might be getting a modern accessories like a radio to work if you want to go that route and not be content with vintage sound....but they may even make 6V radios too...

If you are going to do that, then I would recommend getting something in the mid-late 70's.
