Strangest looking water to air intercooler I've ever seen. Looks like a big fat air to air intercooler on the front there, that's why the core is so thick - to let the air through from side to side.

Yes, you are perfectly right on the first picture the car was equipped with a big front mount air to air intercooler.

Here is a picture of the new set up:

There is no room under the buggy hood for an air to air.
The little water to air unit fits right on top of the transmission.

Wow...that seems like a real good deal. The best I could find on EBAY was about $60 for an 8 foot section of 1.5":

http://cgi.ebay.com/4130-NORM-CHROM-MOLY-STEEL-TUB...3341cbb69d

That would be $900 for 120 feet so it looks like you got a great deal.

Any ideas on the suspension and wheelbase questions yet?

I bought the tubes from a guy who ordered the wrong size.
They are 1 1/8 OD which is not very common for cars because to small for NHRA rules.

I am not planning to race the car so I don't care.
I also like the look of thinner tubing.

For the suspension and wheelbase my my goal is not to mess with what the Mitsubishi engineers designed.
I am just cutting away what I don't need and leave the engine transmission and suspension alone.

The body wheelbase is 94.5" and the Talon wheelbase is 97.4".
That should be close enough.

I will post more pictures very soon.

I went to home depot and bought 25 Sawsall blades.

Then I started the cutting:

I am glad I don't have to deal with all those wires under the dash.

Good luck with that project it looks like you are committed now.

well at least you can sell the parts you cut off to the junk yard.

And damn that is one hell of a rats nest wire mess you got to work through. I though most manufacturers kept there wire harness wraped.

I wanna see it after you mock up the body Very Happy

Anyone in the business world is used to getting 10# of stuff out of a 5# bag....I think you will be attempting to put 10# of stuff into a 5# bag instead. Quite a challenge, I look forward to seeing how it works out.

I'll second that. Ain't no way everything is going to fit under the buggy body without cutting everything away on the body but the fenders. At this point in the photos I had the thought...hmmm... might be able to turn it into an Empi Sportster type project or even a Veep/Hummbug hybrid. At least it would keep it with the 4wd theme. That way you'll be able to build in the needed support for the rear suspension. Leave it as-is and it'll collapse in the first corner.

Good luck -

Might have been cooler to have built this under a Superbeetle body...

To get a grasp on scale take a look at the last picture. In the background you can see the Talon hood and the buggy hood.

I really hope this project works out, as it will be pretty sick! But I have a feeling it is going to take a lot more than sawsall blades to get that body to fit and have this thing actually run.

Keep posting pics, as I would love to see the progression!

Ahh, thank you.
You cannot say that it is not possible before you try...

I hope that I can convince more of you in my next post.

Yep... this is ambitious... best of luck. You could likely cut the hood and the body down the middle lengthwise and widen the whole body by 6 to 8 inches. Looks like that would give room for the strut towers...maybe... While you are at it add a bump in the hood with vents or something on it to make room for the engine.

Did you brace that body at all before you started cutting it? Take a lot of measurments before getting to far in to make sure that sucker is still straight.

Looks like you'll be building a basic full frame for it, due to cutting all the support for the unibody.
Flex, twist of the frame on accel and decel would concern me.
Other than that, looks like a great project!

When completed, it should climb a tree!

Where in Massachusetts do you live? I'm on the Southern coast next town North of Plymouth. I'm a WIZZ with fiberglass and fabrication and would LOVE to help out if you need some.

I'm collecting the parts and pieces to do a somewhat similar unibody swap under my '55 356 Porsche.

Best,

Not to mention turns and bumps.

Rolling Eyes Gee... cut away everything but the fenders...but props... it did sort of "fit". If you can tie everything together to even remotely resemble the buggy it was....
