I got the engine! Its not installed, as you can plainly see, but its in my garage. I'm pretty happy with everything, and overall it looks great! I will have to slide the distributor around 180 degrees to show the badge (it was installed 180 degrees out by accident). The case is painted black; I would have liked to have it left raw.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Engine specs:
Displacement: 1914

-AS21 case, full-flow oiling with remote filter
-Demello 8-dowel counterweighted 69mm crank
-Mahle 94mm pistons and cylinders
-Ported and Polished heads, 40 x 35.5 valves, 3 angle valve job, dual springs
-VW connecting rods
-HD chromoly pushrods
-German lifters
-Compression 9:1, deck .040, chambers 54 cc
-26mm Shadeck oil pump, set up for full flow and filter
-Engle 110 camshaft
-Bosch 010 distributor
-Bosch blue coil
-Dual Kadrons, 135 mains, 55 idles, 28 mm venturis (sound right??)
-1.5" merged header with single quiet pack exhaust

the rotating assembly is balanced to .5 ounce, and the parts themselves to .5 gram. should rev up plenty enough past the point when the mild Engle 110 gives up. I can't wait to get it installed and see what kind of power it makes! I know that the kadrons are limiting my performance a bit, as are the 1.1:1 rockers. I wont know crap until I get it installed, tuned, and drive it.

I have an issue here...if you look closely in the picture above at the oil line fitting that comes off of the block you can see that a long sweep 90 was used. While it looks very nice, I can't get the pulley tin on. The clearance is so tight I can barely even get the fan belt onto the crank pulley. Confused

Looks very nice. Not much is more satisfying that getting that thing in there and running. Good Luck!

I've been reading along with everything and I cant wait to see more progress. You've done some great work, man. I found it particularly interesting because my wife comes from a Mennonite family in Ohio. Keep it real!

thanks, man! I appreciate the feedback that I get; it keeps me motivated. Things have really slowed down on the bug in the last few months. I had to wait a little longer than expected for the engine and it kind of slowed my momentum. Confused I do however have plans next week to get the fuel pump and gas tank installed, the soft brake lines installed and the system bled. I also need to run a couple of new wires from the engine bay to the front for the coil and tach, and after that...the engine goes in! At that point, its a matter of setting up the linkage, syncing the carbs, setting the timing and at last; DRIVE IT!! Dancing

where is your wife from? I live near Walnut Creek, which is about 3 miles from Sugarcreek.

I'll probably wind up using something similar to what you have pictured here.

You'll need to get a fitting like this:
GB 259CL (Gene Berg Enterprises) - As GB 259 machined with clearance to go into the case with the least amount of case clearancing. Case still requires some clearancing, as covered in our full flow instructions, to allow the fitting to be screwed into the proper depth. When done properly the factory tin can be re-installed with only a slight dimple so the engine compartment seal is maintained.

With the fitting installed, it looks like this (from Max Welton's page):

I have the Gene Berg Full-flow kit on my Ghia that uses that short fitting and you can see I can fit the pulley tin without cutting the tin, it fits snugly behind the tin and the pulley doesn't rub against the tin either:

Wow Jim, thanks for all the great pics and information. I will be buying that fitting so I don't have to hack up my nice German tins.

Side note: You probably don't remember this, but I met you once up in Michigan. You were traveling with some other westcoast folk. It was the time that your Ghia suffered a stripped drum and we had to fix it by the roadside. I'll never forget that. AJ Sims was along as well, and that was the time that his turbo-charged 2054 pulled down over 200 ponies on the dyno and he took the "IDA trophy". that was a great weekend.

Update: I bought a new shroud from dear Glenn to replace the 36 horse piece that is giving me so much grief. This 181 Thing shroud should do the trick! repainted and ready for another 37 year stint.

Thanks again Glenn!!

Ah yes...the stripped drum, other than that I had a great drive, left Michigan on Monday afternoon and got home on Thursday morning around 10am, I think that was about a 2500 mile drive home.

Jim, I just remember thinking, "wow, this guy has a lot of gadgets in his vw". You had a stack of PDA equipment, and GPS, and a laptop to keep you company. Your ghia is pretty sweet by the way.

well guys, as you can see, its been exactly 1 year and 1 day since my last post in this thread, and I'm 6 short days from actually getting my car on the road. My project sat pretty much untouched for a good while after last fall.

Fast forward to July of this year: By way of Rich Sedoris, a guy who's opinion I respect, I was put in contact with a very good fellow named Dan Miller, owner of Red Barn Restorations. Last month I turned the remaining tasks over to Dan and he has taken care of all the loose ends, fired the engine for break-in, and according to plan I will pick it up next Saturday.

My concerns: I never got a chance to see any pictures that I asked the builder (Nick Sison) to take, so I don't really have any proof of what is actually in there. I truly don't think that Nick (NSRacing) would have been dishonest about which parts, valves sizes, port-work, etc. that were used/performed on the engine. I guess I'll know more when I get it out on the road. I will update this thread when i get it back to my place.

THANK YOU to Dan Miller of Red Barn Restorations for his impeccable communication, workmanship, timeliness, pricing, and for being an all-around good guy to work with.

Nice bug, I'm glade to see some one else from ohio that has a bug. Was that guy with the VW's on the lower side of Cambridge off of the highway, "The Beetle Barn" if I recall...

I was wondering if there are any issues that you have found with having a bug in ohio. I have a project myself and want to avoid any issues, or fix them now before I find them down the road.
