is there any adjustment on the 30 pict 3 that would mess with the vacuum advance of a 113 905 205 m distributor?
because i ran my car a could hundred miles on a bad carb and the dist was fine. then when i got my carb cleaned up and fixed now the dist is doing funny things.

What kinds of funny things? Does the vacuum diaphram hold vacuum? Has your idle speed changed? _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

The "bad carb" probably required that the timing be set a certain way, and now that you have a "good"? carb you'll most likely need to re-do the tuning and timing. _________________ Greg

Put the metal "shepherd's crook" line back on between the dist diaphragm and the carb... it'll prevent gasoline from traveling down to the diaphragm and destroying it. _________________ jlex.

well by funny things i mean that the points are starting to get white spots on them which eventually in some wierd way insulates them and doesnt allow a spark. ive changed the condenser the coil and points and they seem to be still doing the same thing. ive changed the ground that connects to the trans. under the car and nothing. ive checked the resistance on the wire that connects to the coil and its all good.
so i was driving home and got one last final idea. and it was that it had something to with the vacuum advance maybe its advancing to much or too little since the carb is good now. and when i recieved the carb the man said he tuned it (which i dont believe) i think he just fucked with it.
so idk i'm lost on this one. this is my last idea before i just completley change the dist for a rebuilt on or something. because idk what else it could be. and for somereason i feel lack of advance or too much would caus ethat white spot.
was i in the rigth or the wrong? this is my first vw guys i dont have alot of experience. and i'd sure like some wise words. |

every engine is just slightly different. so the carb needs to be re adjusted.
Theres a large screw and a small screw on the driver side (for left hand drive models) passenger for righthand drive.
The big screw is called the airbypass valve. you twist this one back and forth to set your mixture. the small screw is the volume control (how much of the mix the engine gets) if you back the large screw out the gas stays the same and the air increases if you back the small one out the gas AND air increase.
some people will tell you they are gass and air screws but there not and the solex part diagram confirms this.
Hopefully this will help you out some.
You really do need the metal line that goes between the distributor and the carb. if your vacuum advance is working now it wont be for long running it like that. |

The original vacuum line was mostly made of metal. Where it came out of the carb, it went up first to the top of the carb, then bent and came back down to the distributor. This prevents gasoline from draining down into the vacuum diaphram in the event of a flooded carb, which would ruin the rubber diaphram. Perform a gallery search for engine pictures and you will come across it very quickly. As stated above, it looks like a sheppards' hook. As far as the points getting funky, ensure that the coil is good as well, and make sure the spark plugs are in the correct heat range. Also make sure ALL the spark plug wires are good, and make sure grease or oil aren't getting on the points when you put them in and set them. Grease or oil will foul them quickly. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

It's on the right side of the carb, about 11:00 above the generator. _________________ *ASE Recertified Master Automotive Tech*

There is one on jlex's pic. But not all Pict-3's have them.
I have a 70 also, and there is no fuel cut off on mine. There have been a couple times when i was reminded of the reason for them tho.
Please note, this is an as delivered from the PO pic. I used it because of its clarity in showing the carb. I have already fixed, cleaned, rerouted and all that stuff the Samba folks have told others to do since this pic was taken. I blew the motor up last week anyway, but it sure was fun while it lasted. |

Yeah, most other models have the shutoff solenoid on the left...
The 30pict3 solenoid is a one year only model, too... supposedly it won't interchange with other solenoids. _________________ jlex.
