Cute...
I'd been telling the Hippys stuff like this all along. Hopefully, my voice will still be echoing around in their ears for a little while...
We talked about routes that would best suit "The green dream". Southern, flat (er) and dark seemed to make the most sense.
And, uh....Penny Marshall takes herself WAY too seriously. I would pity ANYBODY who had to work for her. ( BTW, I love being anonymous!) |

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated...Besides, VWs are easier to maintain when you have an isolated secret island hideout.
Actually, just another fellow traveler (who was prepared enough to have available credit to rent a U-haul and tow the thing home. Actually, not the Thing, the Trooper twice and the Westy once). Just wandering over from the Vanagon list. Remember, we were once all at the level of these guys, unless you were born with a wrench in your mouth. I just finished reading to find they had made it to Texas. Now, if you guys end in Fort Worth instead of someplace more direct, I can do something. I can at least figure out what the nylon is. _________________ Scott

The nylon they were talking about is the exhaust wrapping. This could get interesting if the Hippys start posting about more problems. We'll all get a chance to see metal/machines/usage of tools through their eyes. It's a trip!
Hey, nobody ever answered me about the reason my "title" changed in the little box over on the left! How did it change to "grease"? I didnt do that. I have no idea how to even post a picture of stuff. one time I tried to put the little phrase under the bottom of my post's but I couldn't figure that out either!
I've got a blockage when it comes to 'puters... anybody else have that problem? Speaking of which....
Jelous Zack or bam bam, could you guys post the movie in Quicktime for me? I still havent seen it yet. thanks. |

You caught the eye of an administrator. This thread is undoubtedly one of the busiest. Anyway, he bestowed it upon you, as a special coronation. Congrats. |

"If it weren't for Bond, I'd have taken care of Gates long ago."
WMV files are one of those stupid little things that Windows users do to annoy those with the sense to buy sensible computers. You can do two things, download Windows Media Viewer for Mac, which I do not recommend as it is the typically patchwork and shoddy software that we expect from the progenitors of Windows NT; or you can download VLC (also known as VideoLan Client). VLC has its own problems, but it will play just about any sound/video format. It's at http://www.videolan.org/ and its free. _________________ Scott

| OK heres my theories on the oil leak. Its losing oil at a fair rate and its on the fanhousing. Theres 2 oil coolers, one stock and one supplementary and the stock one has been deemed in working order. Now I dont know if the engine in question is an upright or flat engine but my theory is that its the supplementary oil cooler thats leaking, at the point where it connects to the engine. If its an upright engine I think I can safely assume this is connected via a special plate that fits over the oil pump and has 2 pipe fittings on it for oil send and return. Heres a place where oil can leak quite easily, and it would drip down onto the exhaust system. Either the gasket is worn, the pipes arent properly fitted on or the plate is loose. Any of these are a bit of a nuisance to fix given that the pulley wheel is in the way of the plate in question. Id certainly be looking there anyway. translation for hippies: Look behind big spinning thing on the engine that has a belt attached to it for the alternator! See if the oil is leaking from there! If its a flat type engine, I dont know enough about them to give a theory but as far as I know the oil pump is in the same place on the crankcase. |

I don't know if this helps, but I converted it to a realplayer file. If you can't read that either, I'll convert it to quicktime when I have more time tonight, just let me know.

Okay, I thought converting the movie into MOV format was a simple operation. I think it probably is simple, I just don't know the simple way. I've managed to convert it to AVI, which will play in quicktime player 6 and up, but the file is horrendously large at 8.6 MB.
I've gone ahead and posted a page with links to DurocShark's original, my mirror of the original, MrBreeze's Real version, and my AVI version. If anyone else provides more versions I'll link to those as well.
The page is:

Bottomend, i suggested to JB that your title be changed, in honour of your Ahab-like efforts. You have certainly done more than "contribute", so a name change was in order. _________________ OG JHC

No on seems to have mentioned the seal behind the fan hub...
If it is leaking it will blow around and dripp "out of the heater boxes" thus the "it's blowing out the exhaust" ( not burning out of the exhaust)
If it were coming out of the tailpipe in that quantity the plugs would be fouled and I doubt it would run any longer
Bottomend, if all the other things you listed weren't leaking then that is good, but unforunantly it doesn't mean that they won't after hitting the highway at speed for hours in the heat.
Also unless they were patient when checking the oil ( engine off for at least 5 minutes) and know how to properly read a dipstick... by adding " a quart" at a time so often, they may have inadverdently over filled the engine and made things worse ( more leaks) the fact that it has another cooler and oil in it and the lines could also contribute to strange dipstick readings???
good luck guys, hope you make it home so someone can get it all straight once and for all... _________________ my seller feedback

Keifernet, are you refering to the rear main seal? (seal behind the fan hub) I checked it before I degreased the engine and it looked flawless. In my recently synopsis of the 'rear engine oil debate', I posted this info. I had the oppertunity to see it again after 20 miles or so of city driveing and it looked as good as new. Not a drop. Not a drip.
I also schooled them on how to PROPERLY read the oil dip stick. I didn't even think that they might now be overfilleing it....! I made sure to the best of my communicatative ability that they understood the dire importance of the bus being on a flat surface. uh, oh....
Origenal Irish airhead. It's a pancake engine so there is no oil cooler inthe airshroud. Thanks for the insight though! Are we still being viewed by the Irish bus club people? All that attention really gave me a thrill!
Zack, I guess you didn't see the post by my by friend Bam Bam. (who has sense gone crawling off to lick his wounds!) I know NOTHING about 'puters. (see, I cant even spell the word!) Down load and install softwear? Are you kidding! I wish....
I dont know which operating system I'm useing but I know it's in the 9's. It's about 2.5 years old and it's a 733 mhz silver one.My ram (or something) is messed up so I always get weird messages to take it to a 'sevice center'. Everytime someone tried to 'fix it', it ends up worse than before. I'm just frustrated with 'puters. It's a language that I'm not supposed to speak. For example, right now, I'm just thinking about 'typeing" ... in my mind I'm not on a "computer".
I'm sure you've met people like me before, right? They are usually really pretty girls with SUPER INTENSE DADDY ISSUES, that cant do anything for themselves. Or they are WWII vets who didn't grow up with these things and the concept of haveing something in your hand (a mouse) attached to something else (the computer) that shows up on screen ( the pointer) is beyond comprehension. Those people and I would have a very nice time at a computer convention...SITTING ON THE CURB OUTSIDE THE VENUE HAVEING GOOD OLD FASHION FUN THINKING UP NAMES FOR THE DIFFERENT SHAPES OF THE CLOUDS WE'RE LOOKING AT IN THE SKY, DRINKING LEOMONADE FROM A KID TRYING TO RAISE MONEY FOR ANOTHER KID WHO IS TRYING TO BUY THE EQUIPMENT TO START AN AFTER-SCHOOL DRIVE WAY CAR WASH WHILE EVERYBODY ELSE IS INSIDE FREAKING OUT OVER THE LATEST WAY TO SPEND MONEY ON STUFF THAT WILL OBSOLETE BY THE TIME THEY SIGN THE RECIEPT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not trying to sound like a wimp but I've given up trying to understand these things. I dont know if it's just because I've got a Mac and I'm trying to use the internet. Who knows??!! The main reason I have this beast is to record music. I have a Pro-Tools music recording system and I can get it running pretty good. ( I think they designed it for people who are battleing 'Residue issues')
( I think I just made myself dizzy...)( gotta slow down for a minute....)
BLjones, thanks for the info about my 'title change'. I'm honored that JB (James Brown) would take the time to help me. You didn't mean to write EB did you?....hummmm.
I met Everett Barns, like, a year ago at Pomona. I was talking to a guy who was trying to sell a VW fire pump engine sitting in the back of his 50's pick up (sorry everybody, those things all look the same to me...) He came up to the pump ( surrounded by security) and I told him that I pictured him as some old man or something. (He said he gets that alot.)
For what it's worth... I've finished writting a song that was inspired by all this crazyness. That probably doesn't mean much to many people, but it's what I do. I actually finished it pretty quickly (always a good sign) last week and I've just been fine tuning a few things. I'll probably start putting a recording of it togather today. The weird things is, I've just about lost my voice! It's never happened to me before. I think I've ran myself down to the point where my body finally said ENOUGH! |

Yes, I was reffering to the seal behind the fan hub...
Just specualting, I must have missed the part in your post.
I just think that any of the seals could have opened up after being on the highway... and possible overfilling might contribute.
I wasn't trying to second guess you. Anything is possible with this scenario!
Keep writing songs... I'll send you the one I've been working on!

So when are we going to hear the song? When it becomes a big hit you could print this entire thread in the liner notes for the album. Or, maybe the song could be included on a free disc with the smash hit novel... Or maybe it could be the theme song to the blockbuster movie that someone's going to put together.
Regardless of whether the story goes on to Hollywood glory or grocery store paperback noveldom, Thanks for the vicarious adventure Grease! _________________ Not so jealous anymore.

The FRONT CRANK SEAL, usually NEVER leaks oil, unless it is 25 years old and has been sitting for aboout 10 years. The rear main seal, behind the Flywheel is VERY PRONE to leaks, but that is on the opposite side of where we are discussing and if it was what was leaking the clutch would be slipping like a MOFO! (or mofoco)
I would tend to think it might be the oil filler tube is leaking between the metal pipe and plastic filler. OR the breather box's gasket is blown. _________________ 65 Bus, 72 Bus, 63 bus, 98 Golf
