There is a red light in the top middle of the gauge that illuminates when the tank goes to reserve. |
Motest gauges are made by MotoMeter. I don't know why they marketed them under the Motest name because they are similar in size and function. Perhaps they sold them because the MotoMeter name was licensed to particular sources like VW and Porsche, and maybe this was a way to sell them to a larger market without legal problems. Most of the Motest gauges I have seen have a date stamp post '55. (they will accept all MotoMeter senders)
This was installed in my 52 Zwitter. Does not look like the above Motest and has no date stamp on it.

I can replace needles, for a price. Not for cheap, but I can beat any quote from North Holywood Speedometer, and anyone who's bought parts from me will tell you my work is top notch. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

What's the diameter, 80mm? Looks like a Ghia tach, only smaller. Never seen one of these. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

This Störk oil temperature gauge has been installed in my '60 RHD ragtop.
View from behind the dash.
Sender unit is integrated with the oil dipstick. |

|
|
I have the Moto Meter Oil temp sender and the gauge ment for Rally pack, were the needle is positioned to the right, to make a symetric view when not used.
I have tested the sender and the gauge together, but now I do not know if one or both devices dont work.
Is it possible to test the gauge without the sender? I have tried to connect 6v and grounded it, but the needle has not moving at all. Is that correct or should it move? _________________ 1955 Oval Ragtop

As far as I know, the needle should immediately jump to the maximum reading. You can also test them by connecting a 9V battery to the terminals. I've tested quite a few gauges where the needle either flopped around or stopped in the middle, but never had a gauge that didn't respond at all. If it's a temp gauge, it might have a thermocouple input, meaning the gauge is looking for a very specific and very small amount of current generated by the sender and isn't meant to be connected to the vehicle's 6V wiring system at all. _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

I have now updated my post to specify that it is an Oil Temp gauge that I'm referring to. The gauge has clear indications of where to connect 6v and grounding. Hopefully, this will make it easier to answer my questions. _________________ 1955 Oval Ragtop

Hi Erik
You should put ground to were the sender wire should be mounted, I beleieve there is a G on the terminal, but you still have the original papers I send you right?
Now the needle should move from 120 to 0 , if not is there is something wrong with gauge. _________________ Original 1954 3 fold oval

Unidentified Autotemp Sweden gauges - year of make?
I recently bought a bunch of spareparts from an old VW shop that had been closed for over 30 years. I found those Autotemp Sweden gauges. I'll put them up for sale in the ad section later, but first I need to date them correctly.
I find it interesting that both of the gauges misses the EMPI globe! Maybe Autotemp sold their own brand on the Swedish market?
Looking forward to hear your replys ...
Best regards, Richard

sold my vert, now I have a '56 oval. I realize that this is stamped '59, but your thoughts please on a way to mount this in my oval? Do these fit in the column holder type guage pod? I did manage to find 2 NOS senders for this guage. I'd love to get this thing installed |
