Brand new(old!) 1967 Squareback with a story...

This brings up a problem I have with old buried paint. The hood and roof were cracked and rusting, but the rest is covered with cheap spray paint I think. It comes off with soap, a brillo pad and buckets of elbow grease, but a better way there must be. light rubbing compound and a cotton bonnet do nothing, but this is rewarding scrubbing. Any better ideas?

Congrats on getting back into the world of T3's!

Some recommendations...

Connect the air filter assembly to the intake outlet that's coming out of the body at the rear of the engine bay. You are currently missing the boot that connects the two and are consequently pulling hot air into the carbs.

From the looks of it, I don't think your roof rack was installed by a VW dealership... First off, I don't think that rack was offered until late '68, plus yours looks to be mounted much further forward towards the front of the car than the others I've seen. I for one LOVE the late style rack and think it looks awesome with oak slats added to it (see my pics) Smile

Regarding the hood alignment, I think half the T3's I've seen have the exact same problem where there's a little bigger gap on the passenger side. No one has ever been able to tell me why this happens or how to fix it.

Heh, the interior looks like tweed from afar, but it's actually that tiki-style fabric that is commonly found here on the west coast and hawaii. Not sure what it is really... it's one of the few things that the previous owner did that I actually liked. Smile

cool car - looks like a good project
The seat release goes on the bottom of the seat with a wing nut that holds the cable sheath after you connect the cable end to the seat latching arm. The wing nut allows for adjustability so the seat only releases when the door is open.

I think you could maybe put a rubber pad around the contacts then tape your penny over the opening and then you would have pushbutton starting which is so popular right now!!
Did you clean up the engine? It looks good (or did I miss something about the work you performed thus far?).

I'm wondering how the car got the blue/yellow plate on the back. The front plate looks orig but the rear was maybe a replacement although the letter spacing looks odd (to me at least).

Engine is very clean! I have since added a makeshift boot from the air cleaner to the body until I can locate a new one.

The "front" plate is actualy legit black and yellow and is now on the rear. The "rear" plate was actually a black and yellow plastic plate covered by dull plexiglass. The real plate is now on the back and the fake plate on the front hoping that johnny law thinks it will suffice haha.

What is a charcoal cannister?

Also, from my exhaust underneath to the body of the car I am missing a big tube on each side... what goes there?

Oh and ignition fixed. Ordered replacement from ISP and worked fine. Where can I get a cap to cover the opposite side of the key?

And I bought a new engine lid seal, weatherstipping for bottom of rear door and rear door seal.. any tricks to this? Which way goes in which? Glue? What kind?

Dont know why I came over to the type 3 forum....but I really like them!!! I have had bugs for years, never a type 3. But I will be looking now, they are really cool little cars.
