|

If you look up the 1969 Beetle type 1 "easier to read" version of the wiring diagram. The rear defroster has something I cant figure out its labeled "J9". Can someone tell me what that is?
There is a couple of wires disconected on my rear defrost, so I just wanna yank all that stuff out.
BTW my vin is 1192***

Am I looking at the right diagram?
Thanks |

J9 is the defroster relay usually found under the rear seat. _________________ 1971 Super Beetle - Daily Driver

Might do a search for "what is this?"
Seems like plenty of pics about "what's this little black box under the rear seat, driver's side?"
It's the rear window defroster relay. |

Another picture borrowed from the galleries. If you search these things, you'll usually find some pics of what you're asking about...

They put rear window defrosters on so your hands would stay warm while pushing it _________________ Keep it stock and keep it simple(Keep it Cheap)Mid-West-Coast |

Judging from this wiring diagram, if I tested the defroster connections at the back window, should I show 12 volts on the drivers side terminal at the window (the wire coming straight off the relay box) but if I test it at the other side of the window (passenger side) I would get nothing since thats just a ground correct? I flipped my defroster on the other day and it showed I was getting juice but the window did not seem to want to clear up- just trying to do some testing on it. Thanks |

The speedo indicator for the rear defroster is powered by the switch below the dash. This same switch powers the defroster relay. Think of each as a bulb powered by a single switch. When one light is on, it is a pretty good indicator that both lights are on (the second light in this case is the relay). But if someone disconnects the second light, the first will still light up with the switch.
Test that the black wire running from the speedo lamp to the relay is powered at the relay end when the switch is ON.
Test that the M terminal on the relay has 12v all the time (if not check the in-line fuse holder).
Then check that the output B terminal is powered while the A terminal is powered. _________________ AshMan40

I'll check all that but honestly I think the relay box is getting power and working just fine, otherwise I would not have gotten a 12v power reading at the drivers side window connection (the one coming straight off the relay.) I am really just wondering if I am supposed to be getting a reading of any sort on the passenger side window connection as well- I tested that side and didn't get anything. If I am supposed to be getting a 12v reading there as well, it likely means my window filaments are broken. |

OK went out and checked for power at all connections-
12v at the switch itself
12v at the speedo bulb (& light comes on)
12v at the relay switch at M terminal and both A and B together
12v at the rear window connection from the relay (drivers' side)
NO power on the passenger side rear window connection
if I am supposed to be getting power at the last connection and am not but getting it everywhere else does that mean my window filaments are broken or is there another possibility thx |

Run a wire at that "passenger-side" terminal--and ground the wire to a good ground. Then see what happens.

That fuse is fine in my car, as I said earlier I am getting power through the relay box back to the rear window just fine, I am only not getting any reading on the OTHER side of the window, where it grounds out. I am just wondering if I am SUPPOSED to be getting a reading there or not since that is just a ground out.
Only reason I am asking about any of this is because I turned the rear defogger on the other day and it didn't seem to do anything, so I am just trying to find out if there is actually something wrong or if I just didn't leave it on long enough- had it on for about 10 minutes and it never defogged the window. |

This.
My '70 hasn't worked since I got it in 1985. Dash light comes in, and relay activates, but no defrosting takes place.
There are repair kits, but I've never tried any of them. Google "rear window defogger" for links to kits, and even YouTube videos on testing and repairing them. _________________ 1970 Autostik

How can you be sure, I don't mind springing for new glass but I want to be sure first. |

Based on everything you've reported here, your circuit seems otherwise complete and intact. The grid appears to be the only piece of the puzzle that hasn't been verified to work. _________________ -Tim
