If I had the time and the money, I would have a bunch of kubels on the road. I would even have a Kubel dealership |

The ventilation will be the same as an original, for the most part. We have not cut the vents in the rear panel yet. We are also adding vents under the rear seats, as seen on Kooblekar kits. Later on we will put 5 lug rims on the car. They are 15", original Kubels are 16". Wanted to use 16" rims, but the process is a real pain in the $%&. Also can be expensive. I have seen other kooblekar's and other replica Kubelwagen's with 16" rims and gearboxes on the rear wheels, like the originals. Maybe later I might try it but not in the near future. |

Nice work guys. My only advice would be to just keep plugging at it. You've taken on a very large project, but when you break each element down into a sub-project, and systematically keep going at them, it all works out. Be careful and pay attention to details you spot in original photos. It sounds like you're doing that already which is great! It's those details that will make te difference! Looking good! Fun to watch...

Hello-
Here are some more pics of the Kubel. Its not the closest replica out there, but we try. The changes we made to the kit really helped this project. This is our first project and we learned alot on the way and I can't wait to get it done.

I really like the addition of the heater channels. Everything looks good. I can't wait to see it finished. _________________ Athens Euroworks

Shadd-
Thank you for your comments. The kit did not call for heater channels. As you can see in earlier pics the frame and design is different from an original Kubel. Most kooblekar kits dont have the "heater channels" feature. Also the front kick plate is not made the way we did in our project. For me it was a must to have and did not want to look at the frame sections under the doors. We had to make changes as we went along. However I still think the Kooblekar kit is a good kit and is a good starting point in our project. Also the "heater channels" are not functional, we are working around that in the build.
Here is a picture of a finished Kooblekar kit done by Kooblekar. Notice that we did our kick plates different and we added heater channels to make our project more like the original Kubel.
A pic of our project:

Hello-
Wanted to let everyone know the project is on hold right now. Have not worked on it since the early part of Nov. Right now I'm preparing to move from one state to another. Hopefully I will be able to start on it in Feb. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Take care and I will update this post when I start work on the Kubel again.

Hi, and just wanted to say "nice work mate"
I could not agree more with your view that a second car would be so much better, quicker, and easier - If you employed all that you have larned from the experience of doing this.
Maybe, you could act as a consultant for others that build.
Anyway, great work. |

Hello all-
It has been as while since my last post. Hopefully work will start again next week. The delay was due to moving, work, and to find someone else to help me with the Kubel. I will update this thread later with more posts and pics. Take care.

Attached are picts of mine, built by Kooblekar and delivered in mid-September. This is my first air cooled VW since my 73 Beetle I drove in college from 84-87.
It was built on a 76 super beetle pan, converted back to a standard beetle. The motor is from a late 68 Type 3. I have spent the last 6 weeks "de-bugging" it from them. I've had problems with the seat brackets, shifter, and brakes. I think I am finally working through most of these issues, although I suspect it will take another few months to get it dialed in completely.
I strongly recommend the rear vents for the engine ventilation over the air scoop. I suspect if I ever do a rebuild on mine, I will have it changed to ventillation holes on the rear panel. With the top up, it makes it a real screamer. I also need to build a battery box to get it off the rear floor in the open, as well as just tighten everything in the car up. KKSW has a lot of issues, and some of their work is half-assed, at best. I usually bounce between amazement on how the thing was put together, and then disbelief at other things.

Nice work, boys
Here's what my '73 based Kubel looks like right now. This Winter, I'm going to raise it back up from the California lowering job that was done to it
One of the PO's did the body work, I've got some KKW parts, and I'm going to get some Czech replica parts to detail and improve it.
BTW, Jason. What is the diameter of your door cross-brace tube? Thanks.

Mike,
I am sure your vehicle is a lot of fun, but isn't that a modified thing or german military car? It's a different animal than mine and Jason's cars.

Hi Tim....
I agree, mine is a modified Thing. And, when I get it "dolled up", it will be as close to a Kubel as I can get without more major bodywork. As you said, it's just for fun
Can you tell me what diameter your door brace tube is? The PO who modded mine used a tube that looks too small, and it's lower than it ought to be, because it's behind the seat backs instead of above them. So, I'm going to re-do it, and I'd like to get closer to the correct size. Thanks,
BNMike |

Fritzi, my kubel, is going to its first "away" game this weekend, so I will see what I can do for when I get back from that.

Hello all,
Thank you guys for posting pics of your projects. BNMike I will try to found that out for you (diameter of my door cross-brace tube). Here are the latest pics on my car and the work done on it the past two months:
-Brake fluid reservoir installed, brakes now operational.
-Emergency Brake handle rebuilt, now operational.
-Front & Rear Shocks
-Upper & lower ball joints
-Rear seals & transaxle boots.
-All 4 lug drums replaced with 5 lug drums, front & rear. No 4 lug to 5 lug adapter.(conversion star) on the rear wheels.
-5 lug rims put on Kubel.
-Pedals installed
-New throttle cable with repair done inside tunnel between the pans, to keep cable from bowing. Also new metal tubing for throttle cable at the rear by the transaxle.
Starting on body soon, getting ready to order more parts for the body to finish. (door hinges, shovel mounts, etc....)
1971 VW Karmann Ghia engine, 1600 cc dual port, AS 41 block.
Take care and I will keep you guys updated.

Thanks,Jason.
That looks like nice work you are doing BNMike
PS.....I see you are using KKW's spare tire tower. So am I, but I found it is a tight fit for a 15" wheel. A little "re-modeling" around the top corner will fix that |
