all im looking for is a general estimate to ship one
and the T4 hood really isnt that much bigger than a T3 one

I actually had a T3 hood shipped from California to Michigan for around $75, I think - Greyhound. I was proud of the fact that I managed to fit it in my 98 Golf and brought er' home unscathed.  |

Actually its the other way around. I routinely scrap type 3's for their limited D-jet parts and a hand full of relays....
I have crated a type 4 hood for shipping...but put it on my u-haul truck when i moved.
You MUST crate it...or it will get destroyed. Its easy. Use four 2"x6"s for an outer perimeter. Remove the hinges and lock and tape them to the inside of th hood. Wrap all the outer edges in cardboard. Make the outer 2x6 perimeter fit tight. Use a single 1x4 on each side of the hood run down the center to keep the hood centered in the frame and to give support to the 1/4 or 3/8 plywood you screw to the outside. The crate will cost you about $35 to build in home depot stuff.
Mark it "do not top load"...on both sides.
Call yellow freight and give them the weight aboyt 110 lbs....and all of the dimensions. In freight terms...space is more expensive than weight...but both are in the formula. It will most probably run about $150 to ship.
Its highly probable that I can find you a 411 hood in Oklahoma city when I get home for christmas. I have connections there...and there are quite a bit of type 4 parts hidden here and there. Ray |

Grayhound is not a wise method of shipping something like a hood. A type 4 hood is a good deal larger. And...its going on a bus with about 20 stops and a ton of luggage moving in and out. It will likely be under the luggage at some point.
Its also possible that if its crated right...fed-x freight can move it for you. Ray |

i sent a t34 hood from SC to TX via UPS.
i can't remember how much it was,. but it wasn't as bad as i thought..
i had to tape the corners but it did not have to be boxed. _________________ Frank

Where do you advertize said panels?
The problem is that serious type 4 owners usually already have a pretty good supply of parts and panels...except in case of accidents.
The rise in type 4 owners of late......most of them.....are those just getting into it and expect that it will be a cheap deal and usually are the type that won't pay for things like body panels to be shipped. As there are more type 4 owners that get serious about it....this will change.
It may be too late for most to get into type 4's for anything approaching cheap.....as these cars are already rare. Back in the day...no one wanted a type 3 either. I have bought complete runners for less than $100. There were many more type 3's made than type 4's. Most of both of them got scrapped.
Of the people who liked type 4's ...many got out of them because you simply couldn't find parts. All of that changed with the internet.
In the past five years the amount of people on both the samba and STF that are new owners of type 4's has easily trippled (still small). Ray |

Mike Fisher sent me a T3 hood from Oregon to Los Angeles, via Greyhound for about $60 IIRC. My bro Don picked it up at Greyhound and then dropped it at a freight forwarder to ship it to me... Rear quarters for any model, rear sedan engine lids, and front fenders are often what is needed when you're talking bolt on panels. Those are what I need or people ask me if I have. I don't recall if you had any of those along with the wagon lift gates. A lot of people start their search for a Type 4 by looking for one with the best body, so I guess it isn't surprising they aren't looking for body panels for restoration purposes. _________________ '74 412 wagon

The type 4 hood is a good deal larger and heavier than the type 3 hood. Trust me it will not be an easy fit in a bus luggage compartment. Greyhound is not a good method. Also with the inside strengthening insert....buying type hoods that are dented....is problematic bodywork. Saying it came through with few dents is not worth my time.
It better arrive with no dents.
A type 4 hood is difficult to pick up unless you wear a 44 long....you better have long arms. And at about 45-50 lbs....and a wide grip.....it will get dropped on its very sharp corners very quickly.....something the type 3 does not have because of the cowling curve of type 4. Straightening those corners....will suck. And if they are bent, your car will look like crap.
Again...if you are shipping parts..do not go through the trouble of finding a nice 411/412 hood and cheap out byshipping Greyhound. By comparison...type 3 parts grow on trees.
Greyhound has "0" warranty on things shipped.....other than listed value....and what will that get you if hoods are hard to find. This is not like shipping a TV or laptop where you can just go down to best buy and grab a new one.
Again....the 411 or 412 is not a cheap VW to own. being overly cheap with one or its parts will get you nowhere. Ray |
