I'm a Herbie hater, but I commented anyway, so neener-neener!
Very cool project, and awesome to see you getting them so involved in it. Looking forward to seeing pics of the kids riding around in it, too. _________________ -Thomas

just so you know NOT every Herbie was a 63....watch the movies again. one was actually a oval in one scene for a split second...now no never a super but not all 63 so any rag top could be built to be a herbie clone....but a 63 is the norm. |
That's right! I noticed recently that one of the cars in Herbie goes Bananas is a later model maybe a 67 but I'm not quite sure. |

I also saw a picture of several "Herbies" lined up during filming and one of them had a "W" decklid with snowflake taillights. _________________ -Greg

Ok.
Have I mentioned anything about how much I love Craigslist? No? Well check this out. Tonight I went to a guy's house and bought a small load. ALL of this stuff is brand-new, still in the box or plastic-wrapped and he even provided receipts for every piece of it. I bought the following:
-Bentley Manual
-Steering Gear Box
-Master Cylinder
-Steering Dampner
-Axle Beam Seals
-Front Beam Grommets
-Front Wheel Cylinders
-Rear Wheel Cylinders
-Front Brake Shoes
-Rear Brake Shoes
-Front Hardware Kit
-Rear Hardware Kit
-Front Rubber Brake Hoses
-Rear Rubber Brake Hoses
-Front Brake Drums
-Rear Brake Drums
-Front Inner Wheel Bearings
-Front Outer Wheel Bearings
Total amount of receipts all added up: $898.90
Total amount I paid: $240.00
Man do I love Craigslist!! _________________ -Greg

And so not a whole lot in the way of progress this week. I was able to get the passenger side pan half all trimmed, paint stripped and all of the holes drilled for spot welding done. I had big plans but they kinda fell on their face as I had a bunch of other stuff to get done. It's all fine and dandy however as my Weld-Thru Primer didn't show up like it was supposed to anyway (damn Eastwood's). I will get the other side ready to rock on Friday and should hopefully be ready to start welding on Sunday. Sorry for the boring pics.
With the pan in place, I laid underneath the car and used a Sharpie to mark the braces so I would have good placement of my drilled holes
I know the original holes were 1.25" apart but I went 1.50". I figured this would be plenty good enough. I'm glad I did because I was way sick of drilling holes...

So, the Sharpie mark is the edge of the original pan? Then you drilled through both pieces? Looks like you will be finished with pans soon!
P.S. Paying 26% is excellent for New Parts! _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

This is where I made the sharpie marks from. I made them from underneath the car.

Nothing really picture-worthy happened yesterday but I did get the driver's side pan half all trimmed, paint stripped and drilled. Everything is ready now and all I have to do is weld both sides in. Stay tuned. _________________ -Greg

This is too cool, I started wrenching on Bugs with my dad when I was 7... on a ravenna green '74 Beetle. The car had been sitting in a driveway by my school for a couple of years (I drew a picture of it on my first day of kindergarten), and one day my best friend came into class and said "THE GREEN BUG IS FOR SALE!!"... so I ran out of class, said I had a headache and phoned my dad at work to come and get me... because of a "headache"
He wasn't too happy about driving an hour to come get me because of a car... but a week later when I came home from school, guess what was in the garage?
That's me 20 years ago with a '71 Super parts car... where I REALLY learned how to take apart a car!
I'm actually a mechanic working for Volkswagen now... and I own 15 aircooled Bugs |

Cool story. I'm really hoping this gives them not only an appreciation for old VW's but also just an interest and some knowledge about what makes a car work and how to do some repairs. I spent my childhood helping my dad out in the garage restoring cars so I'm just passing it down. _________________ -Greg
