I've read you can use a type 1 thermostat in a type 4 engine. How do you modify it? Do you have to modify it?
What does a good thermostat cable look like? Could I use a bicycle brake cable with the ball on the end? |

Yep you can use a type1 t-stat on the type4. If you go here to aircooled.net http://tinyurl.com/fagm they explain how to modify it. Its nothing major, just unscrewing a couple of parts. MAKE SURE you get the 80-85 degree model and NOT the 65-70 degree one. You can find the cable at most online sites. Here is one from BusDepot http://tinyurl.com/fah9 . They also still have some type4 t-stats in stock but they are about twice as much as the type1. |

Ok, most everyone seems to be out of them and they are on back order. Go Westy has them for the type 4 for $51.25 (type 1s are listed $19-24). The guy also said he'd go with the original part over the type 1.
My question is, is there a big difference AND does anyone have one they want to get rid of? |

Don't buy a used t-stat. The cost alone is reason enough to wait until aircooled .net gets restocked, go w/ a type1 t-stat and modify the cable. Barry |

that link isn't working on how to modify the type 1 thermostat. here is the link for the modification:
http://www.germansupply.com/xcart/customer/home.ph..._in_t4.tpl
there are 3 pages so you have to keep clicking next to see the complete mod.

You sure can use a standard bicycle brake,/shift cable with the nub on the end, works good, thicker than stock, longer than stock (and I kept it extra long enough so i could hold on to it)
cheap! free for me, I was lucky and a friend was working at the bike shop that day _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

well i finally got my thermostat all hooked up. its lower 20's in nashville tonight so i took i for a test run. it seemed to fully open in about 15 minutes of normal city driving. that seemed a little quick to me considering how cold it was. i have the 65-70 degree thermostat because i didn't realize there where different temperature thermostats when i ordered mine from bus depot. can u even buy the 80-85 degree thermostat somewhere? _________________ 76' Westy |

Here is the current link for the thermostat:
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=111119159A
This is genuine Volkswagen/Germany. It is discontinued but we still have inventory. Word has it that the tooling was destroyed in a fire, so future availability does not look good. _________________ - Ron Salmon

yep thats the one i'm currently using. its a 65-70 degree thermostat. i'm wondering if you can buy the 021-119-159A Type 4 72.5-79 (85-90C) or the 043-119-159 Type 1 FI 75-up (80-85C)
ratwell's page is awesome for thermostat info: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Thermostats.html _________________ 76' Westy |

No, they're all gone. The 111 is all that's left. _________________ - Ron Salmon

I got a type 1 thermostat off thesamba classifieds. It was unfortunately the pre-75 65-70 degree one, but better than nothing.
I couldn't figure out if the cylindrical threaded brass piece was designed to come off. I gripped it in the vice but it slipped with the pressure I was comfortable putting on it to hold, and so I figured it wasn't coming off.
I was able to make my own step stud by sawing off the head of a long tin screw and running a die over it, 1 end is now the 6mm x 1.0 thread, the other is a 4mm x .70 going into the thermostat. It's a little long but it clears the part where the block sticks out when it's hot so all good.
Double checking the germansupply how to, I see that the cylindrical part does actually come off. Oh well. |

A waste of money, they fail in the closed position, usually in a couple of years or less. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
