My vents have been painted. They were normally black. My passenger side kickpanel was busted up quite a bit when I got the car, so I made another one as I could not find one for sale. Both have obviously been recovered. Note in the photos below the hose clip that zundapp refered to. I could actually do my hoses now that I know you just crimp them into the vent.

No plastic bezel, just the clean rolled edge of the oval ring. That's what I remember. This has turned out to be a good in depth post. Great for all us 62 (and early 63) owners.

I couldn't agree more. Thanks guys for all the photos and comments. All this time I've been looking for the non existant attachment between the vent and the hose.

Here's what mine looks like. I really can't believe they would just shove the hose into the holder that way.

Since I hadn't looked at it closely, I had thought that someone had rigged the rear heater vent ducting with this stuff. On closer inspection today, I discovered that it's actually OG VW. The part number on the "T" and it's design for "screwing in" the ducting, as well as the molded vent tips lead me to believe the whole thing is original. That plus the fact the original owner claims no knowledge of their ever being any mods made to it.

It's a '62 Euro Rag if that matters to anyone.

Zozo,

Thanks for the photos,

The coupling with the 113 255 515A helps us who have no clue of some parts. Your whole setup would appear to be original and although chances are slim in finding one, the number does make it easier.

Since this was one year only, I'll bet there is almost next to none for sale. But, who knows.

I bought from the orig owner, but someone (probably a mechanic) tossed parts.

Good info Thanks

I carried around heater parts for my '62 bug to several shows in a free box. I couldn't give any of it away.
I ran all the heat up front, so I didn't need any of the original parts.
I still have this T connector if anyone wants it:

Dumb question and thread resurrection time. When a '62 has everything in place, the rear heat is always "on" if the knob is turned, correct Question Mine has only every had front heat, so turning the knob equals defrost, opening the foot vents equals heat and defrost...

Thanks, Doug

Correct... No rear adjustment at all.

Its a crap rear system and a failed attempt at decent cabin heat until the fresh air change in 63..

Does anybody know if the metal tube shown above was replaced sometime later in '62 production with the paper tube? Someone with an original '62 is telling me that her car is completely original including the paper tube but the poster above is saying that the metal tube is original. I searched in Progressive Refinements and in the "Car of the Century" but could not find any reference to the tube itself, only to the fact that 62's had ducts under the rear seats.

Yeah, that's one of those areas where COTC has some errors. I've looked all that up before and found nothing either. The early 70s parts book isn't much help either, it just shows the superseded assembly.

The Technical Bulletins aren't of any help either. I thought that had been included in this thread previously but I'm not seeing it, so here that is, which I think wraps up about every mention I've seen of this setup in factory literature over the years.

My 62 is/was all paper tubing under the rear seat. The right ad on spout and "Y" were plastic.
I ditched mine.. as they were a worthless attempt and robbed heat to the RF..

The wife's gotta be toasty.. well. warm.. well.. at least not chilled.. Laughing

Id much rather just upgrade to late 63-64 style.

I looked more closely at my set up, which is paper hoses with a metal junction piece, and the metal junction has a VW part number on it (the pic above of the same piece is from my car). So I am thinking my set up is original too, and that the metal tube was a replacement part that was supplied to those who wanted to add the rear heating to a pre-1962 Beetle.

... and then that became the default replacement part after mid-Dec 1962. I wonder if the parts department ever carried the stock Y pipe and that diameter paper hose...
