Just bought a 1961 Westfalia and the paint is badly faded! Teh bus is pretty rust free with a few problem areas on the roof and rocker! My question is what would the procedure be to bring back the good areas of the OG paint back! Don't want to mess the paint up but would like to know what others have done to make their paint shine again
Here are some pics of my new bus!

Thanks

If it's just faded I use white rubbing compound, I just did a bug and it brought the paint back nicely.

If you would like to experiment get a clay bar with its lubricant. Wash the car and while in the shade use the clay bar and its lubricant over the whole car. Wash the car again and wax it with a non abrasive carnuba wax.

The clay bar will not remove much paint (which is already thin in your car). If you do not like how it comes out go to a glazing compound (not as harsh as a rubbing compound).

Good luck.

I've seen the results of the clay bars and they work nicely.

Be prepared for lots of elbow grease though.

Here is a good article that I followed to get the paint on my old Porsche to look good again. I used the 3M stuff across the baord with excellent results.

Keep in mind that, with old, faded paint, anything you do is a temporary fix. That kind of paint is really dead. You can clean it up and make it look sharp but it won't be a lasting job. You'll likely have to repeat the whole process at 4 to 6 month intervals. The real, long-term solution is a repaint. Shine it up now but start making plans for the inevitable.

Before you try anthing that is abrasive try buying some orange cleaner, spray it on and leave it for a couple of minutes, then clean it off with soap and water. That will remove most if not all of the oxidation and not remove alot of the good material. Try it in a small spot first to get the hang of it. You may have to do this a couple of times depending on how oxidized the paint is. This may seem really low tech but I have used it successfully in the past.

Patina!!?? Mostly dust from the 33 years in the garage! Patina does not happen in Nebraska! Patina one year is rust the next! And a hole the year after that!!! Anyway I used 3M rubbing compound and 3M Glaze it and I did it by hand! My wrists haven't hurt this bad since I tried Viagra!!! ;^{)> I wanted to be super carfull with the paint and not sure of myself enough with a buffer!

Anyway here are those pics!
